World of Warcraft

I guess it’s time to come out of the closet with this…

I don’t play World of Warcraft.

In fact, I refuse to play WoW. And when pressed about it, I get very animated about not playing it. Why? No interest for one, but there’s another reason: self defense. Read this entry from Rands In Reposes and come back.

That’s why I won’t play it. You don’t give a diabetic keys to a candy store. You don’t give a heroin addict a vile full of crack. You don’t hold Elphaba under a waterfall. Bad ideas, all of them. I’ve got too much to do already these days to “waste” time on WoW… besides, I refuse to give up the time I dedicate to shooting other humans in real time via Halo. Guilds… Level 60… pft. Who needs’it?

Honestly. Just say No.

Find Out: 03.09.06

Just like I said last week, there was a lack of research – and common sense – on behalf of the media, concerning The Origami Project.

Nothing was released today – Week 2 has simply become enabled, offering a bit more teasing as to what the Origami Project is about… why would there even be a set of Week 1-3 links if they product was dropping on Week 2? Dare I guess that Week 3’s link will go live next Thursday?

Wonder if there are going to be retractions or corrections published today.. pft, probably not.

Sight, Beyond Sight

Call me annoyed.

I’ve got a 18″ LCD at home and have had it for a while. For such a long while, it only supports VGA – as in no DVI – but it’s OK: I don’t spend much time on my home PC: remote desktop has helped me stay on the couch, while checking email. At work, I have a 17″ Sony LCD. It’s got a thin bezel and a DVI cable, so it’s pretty clear. Rather sharp, in all honesty. Also has an adjustable neck which is key.

17″ is small. Very small, given the amount of stuff I have on a screen at any given time. It’s the nature of development: compiler, bug window, email are all running at once. Bigger screen LCD’s have been on a market for forever and a day… so I asked for a new monitor at work.

The end result? I’m now so very, very close to buying my own monitor at work that it’s really pissed me off.

Lack of Research: Origami Edition

The blurry line between blogging and news reporting is getting worse with each passing day… guess it proves that people will believe anything if it’s written down. Like if someone takes the time to write it, it’s got to be true.

Could you imagine that? All your base are belong to me!

Washington-ism #2: d1gg t3h l33t

I just spent five minutes circling for a place to park at my building at work, as if it was Saturday afternoon at a mall. Ironic, since I had left campus to stop by the mall during lunch, where there was more than enough parking. It’s become clear to me that the general rule of thumb is if there are supposed to be people somewhere there will be a lot of them – no half way. I guess Geek reproduce like rabbits, when kept to one region.

I was happily reading a book on the elliptical at the gym, when someone got on the machine directly to my right. I looked over and noticed a bit of scrolling black ink on her left arm. It looked sorta like Arabic but not quite… in fact, I thought it looked rather Tolkien-ish. I said, “Excuse me… is that Elvish?” and got a “Yes!” with a high five in return. Proof positive that a large Geek population is a healthy thing. Sorta.

Only in Washington.

Trackbacks – Or Lack Thereof

Today Kasia noted that she hadn’t gotten a proper trackback to her blog since August. Forgetting that I had trackbacks active, I took a look at my TypePad control panel: I got one in December… but I have only been pinged 54 times over five years… and I’ve had at least 54 spam pings come in over the years that had to be deleted by hand I’ve also noticed that Steve also pulled’m from the ‘Goat, but I can’t remember when that happened; since I link to him a few times a month, it shows how often I’ve used trackbacks in my own posts. Screw that.

For what it’s worth, I’ve had 888 posts [excluding this one] and 3367 comments [of which half are probably me!] but I’m pretty much done with trackbacks…

You Have a Meeting in Building 7

Microsoft: Over the next three years, Microsoft will add 14 buildings and a total of 3.1 million square feet (288,000 square meters) to its corporate campus in Redmond, Wash., enough to provide office space for approximately 12,000 people. Seven of the buildings will be new construction; the other seven are existing buildings that Microsoft recently purchased.

And so another practical joke source dies…

Sign of the Anti-Bacterial Times

Over the last couple of weeks, “flu prevention” has sprung up on campus. I guess I should be fair: it’s popped up everywhere. Like the gym, Fred Meyer (with free flu shots or whatever), and almost anywhere you look on campus. “Wash your hands often” signs in the bathroom and an industrial sized dispenser of Purell in the kitchen. The wash your hands bit has done nothing to increase the benefit of doubt that I give most men, withregards to their behavior in the pisciadu. And of course, you know Purell. They make that no-wash hand sanitizer stuff… the same stuff that I remember using when I was a French Fry Technician(TM) at Burger King… over 16 years ago.

I’ll probably wake up in a cold sweat, yelling “Level Five!” as part of some twisted flashback or something.

Fred vs AppleCare

Fredart [of megatokyo]: Thanks, Apple. Your ‘policies’ here really make me wanna stay a loyal Apple fan. I’m not even going to go into my now dead iPod (i refuse to even try to get that repaired) We all know iPods are a disposable commodity. Is that where we are going with Laptops too? With our data?

Fred vs AppleCare, or “what happens when your Powerbook dies”… I only lived through one small episode of this, but I can empathize. Although, I can’t tell who won this round because it sounds like both of them lost something…

Why Didn’t I Think of That?

TUAW: So the other night, […] we had a problem with Jason Calacanis’s Powerbook G4. It would boot and run through the loading Mac OS X screen very quickly, but at the point where it was supposed to load the login screen, we were greeted by the default blue OS X background and the mouse pointer arrow and nothing else. And it just stayed there.

Long story short, they got the Powerbook back on its feet with five lines in a Unix terminal. With rather intuitive module names like fsck and mv. Mount was also used but that’s OK because it sound vulgar. My point? The OS X box got itself into a state where it was unusable. It had to be bailed out. It needed a bunch of commands that only a tech would know; at least a level well beyond the point and click aspect of things.

Moral of the story? AppleHeads in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones through Windows.

The Freedom Of Randy Speech

Over the last four plus years I’ve had to delete two real comments. Oh, I’ve deleted buckets of duplicate postings, spam comments and spam trackbacks, sure, but of real comments I’ve only delete two. And edit one, but that’s just to fix typos. I don’t remember what the first one was; I remember the second one being completely out of place – as it was on a business related post – and in what I deemed to be extremely poor taste. I’ve since heard that the person that left the second comment is pissed off by my actions, claiming he’s got the right to Freedom of Speech and he won’t be back to my blog.

Hoo, I love fresh idiocity in the morning.
