When a Good Idea Goes Bad

Simply put, I got an email from my publisher… it went into some stuff with suggestions about how to market my book and what too look for during the upcoming month. You know, all of those special “weeks” and “months” that have been claimed by people to make their own prospective groups feel special. Things that seem to be fabricated by attention-grabbing groups or card companies like “Great Aunt’s Day” or “Random Nationality Focus Month”. I don’t care what group it is; they’re all guilty of whining for attention. Think I’m wrong? Check out the list and you’ll see what I mean…

    May Events:

  • Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
  • Be Kind to Animals Week
  • National Barbeque Month
  • National Bike Month
  • National Comfort Month
  • National Community Action Month
  • National Egg Month
  • National High Blood Pressure Education Month
  • National Historic Preservation Week
  • National Pet Week
  • National Police Week
  • National Travel & Tourism Week
  • Nursing Home Week
  • Older Americans Month
  • Small Business Week

All of this for May… have ya seen anything more ridiculous?

  1. To further show we are a strange society and going waaaaay beyound the “Who cares point”

    What is a mule?

Today is Matanzas Mule Day, the day during the Spanish-American War (1898) that the U.S. bombarded Matanzas, Cuba, resulting in one lone casualtya mule. Pay tribute to this equine martyr by reading about mules on the British Mule Society’s Web site.

  2. You forgot Teacher Appreciation Week (first full week of May).

I like the months that celebrate minorities like Black History month, Hispanic Heritage month, Asian Pacific Islander month, Native American month, and Women’s month. I see nothing wrong with that.

Buth ave we gone overboard with all the days and holidays? Maybe.

  3. I see something wrong with that. What about Caucasian Month? Men’s Month? Single WASP Month? Dog Owners Month? There’s plenty wrong with elevating one race or gender in the name of “equality”. Special things like this only creates inequality between groups and promotes discrimination.

  4. I agree with Randy! I work in an office that openly celebrates and makes a big deal out of ‘black history month’ and ‘Hispanic month’. Are other races not just as equal? I think there should be a ‘white history month’. People say, “that’s every month”….that’s a load of B.S. Are not all people equal? Then why do we elevate one over another? Racism does not work and neither does reverse racism. We can not atone for the errors of our fore-fathers, but lets not repeat their errors in this day by turning the tables…let’s learn from history, not repeat it. Diversity does not work, it divides. Taking pride in our nation as a whole and the fact that each of us, as a citizen, is a piece of that whole is what will work.
