Innovating For the Lazy iPod’r

iPoding: LoadPod, the service that rips your CD collection into your iPod so that you don’t have to, has added local service in several new areas…

This raised an eyebrow on me. They come to your house. They pick up your iPod (or iPod Mini) and your CD collection. They return within five days with your disc and your iPod stuffed with you entire collection. I mean I know some people that have close to 500 CDs (I have over 300 myself) and the question I always get from the MP3 curious is “how do I load all that music?” What I’ve done is rip a CD when I pick up the CD to listen to it. That way I don’t blew a few weeks of PC time, just ripping the entire lot, and it makes sure that my “most liked” music is on the iPod.

Now with these guys, it’s pain free and takes none of your time. From a business point of view, it’s pretty ingenius, seeing as you only need a PC to call yourself a “dealer”. You can always rent more too, if you get in a huge load of CDs to rip.

That was the good; how about the ugly? This is pretty freakin’ expensive. $20/travel charge is OK but it’s $1.50/CD. My collection would cost $470 to rip! I mean I’ve heard that you can’t buy back wasted time, but gimmie a break here…

And then, the defacto reason why this idea will bomb: they will only rip the CDs in AAC format. Bah!

  1. That’s kind of nice though. I paid my nephew $50 to do 200 of my CDs. The hook was that I fed him and bought him a pair of headphones that his mom wouldn’t let him have (they were huge and she thought they were ugly!)
