New Governor for WA, Finally

Ridiculous. Now that the Democrats have won the Governor seat after two different recounts and randomly added votes, they are strutting toward Olympia. Mind you these are the same people that had to have the hand recount because “machines make mistakes” [and humans don’t?!] – these same people are now offended by the Republicans that are asking for a “second” election. If the Democrats are so positive that their candidate won fairly, why not have a second election? It’s not like any of the counts or recounts were all that conclusive – the fact that they made the comment of “the Republicans only want another election because they lost” just pissed me off… like the Democrats demanded two recounts only because they were concerned about fairness?

Right. I’m officially insulted but this latest twist.

New Blogger on the Scene

Chuck’s Journal: I was watching the news the other night and a story from Texas where the parents sold their kids Christmas presents on e-bay (all three boys were to get the new Nintendo DS and games).

I heard the same story and did a Snoopy-esque dance of joy when I heard it, since I agreed with the TX parents whole heartedly… even more so that they donated the money they got via the auction to their local church! As a parent, Chuck’s got some more to say about it [and for the readers that have been here from the beginning, this is the same Chuck that’s been mentioned in previous posts!]

Misplaced Energies

While riding in the car the other day I heard a news report about a bit of controversy down south. Seems there’s a group of people that are all kinds of pissed off that fewer buildings are willing to fly the Confederate flag these days… Oi.

Wireless Power?

I have to charge a few things every night. Well, “have to”. I opt to charge things every night so that I never run out of power; most of my things can go days at a time without a fresh charge. And these “things” include my phone (AudioVox SMT5600), my iPod (Apple), my Bluetooth headset (Motorola HS820), and my notebook (IBM ThinkPad T41). Obviously each device has its own charger; not that big a deal in my home, but it’s an ugly mess when travelling. How nice would it be to have a “charging pad” that you could just drop devices on and have them charge? Very nice, and according to SplashPower, it should soon be very possible.

I remain skeptical – as any technologist should be of a product description that includes things like “any device that has [insert hardware/software solution here] in it” and “should be available in [insert year here]” – but it’s nice to dream.

Random Encounters in Small Packages

I popped into my once-local Starbucks during my Thanksgiving trip to CT and was greeted by three different crew members that working there during the summer. Today I stopped in – if only because I hadn’t had a mocha in a about a week – and bumped into a few more crew members, one of which was the Evil Midget – she made a few Blog appearances while I was book writing. Seems that she was transfered to a different store a few months ago and was only in the Orange store to pick up supplies – I find it funny that we bumped into each other, given that we’ve both been relocated for our jobs, but such is life here…

Should explain why I was so intrigued by the anonymity I gained by moving to WA!

Empathy in Numbers

Furrygoat: This, of course, usually has the unfortunate side effect of landing me in some hot water with the family when it comes to proper etiquette. Such was the case with this year’s holiday card. … Well, let me just say that the family didn’t quite understand or appreciate my good sense of humor. My parents (as were other relatives apparently) weren’t as pleased with it as I was.

Nice to know that I’m not the only one quagmired in holiday chaos this year!

RAVE: Carmine’s of New York

Booyah! After a six month exile from the Roman Empire – located in and around both New York City and Boston (good Italian food can be found) – I spent a few hours at Carmine’s in mid-town Manhattan to help ease the pain. Yay me!

“That Said FIVE?”

Back to the hometown. It was snowing all along the i-95 corridor but it wasn’t sticking until I headed north, deeper into Connecticut. Then I hit my hometown, which was like crossing into a snow globe. Rented an SUV to drive up from JFK because of it, actually. Since I hadn’t read an email for over twelve hours, I had to get online – while talking to a friend in IM, I sent over a Weather.com link to share the current weather: 19 degrees/feels like 5 and it’s supposed to be 50-ish on Wednesday.

I don’t think people believed me, when I described winter in New England, but this is typical.

Don’t Look at This

Ever pass an accident that’s on the side of the road and felt obligated to look? That you just have to take in an entire eye full of something gruesome, before you can turn away? You know you aren’t supposed to look, but you do anyway… it’s probably just human nature, right?

It happens on the web, too… but at least this made me chuckle first.

Programmer’s Gripe: Hours of Programming

I have a stone in my shoe. The now-daily outcry of “abuse” of EA employees, which was instigated by the wife of an EA employee. It’s almost as annoying as being governor-less and finding “new lost” ballots on a daily basis, knowing that even if mine is found, it won’t count because of a registration snafu… I’ve had quite enough of the “EA Scandal”, especially when it’s not a scandal in the first place. Ah, Holiday cheer indeed!

MSN Toolbar

I’m not sure when it became a must have killer app, but it seems that the press thinks it is – so do software companies, seeing as everyone is working on a searching product lately. As such, there is a beta of the new MSN Toolbar available and while a lot of people seem to like it, there is one universal complaint: why do I need this [insert descriptive vulgar term here] butterfly button on my Desktop bar?

You don’t – keep reading for a registry hack – found on Channel 9 – to remove all the buttons from your Desktop bar.

Xbox Live Tip + Motorola HS820 Bluetooth Headset Review

Did you know that Xbox Live uses a 2.5mm headphone jack? The same jack that many cell phones use? I didn’t until recently, but it’s true. I even found a pretty good one to use -one that doesn’t have the boom arm. I originally bought it for my AudioVox SMT5600, but since it dropped a few calls – the biggest reason for getting rid of the Motorola MPx200 in the first place – I decided to chuck it all for a Bluetooth headset, which freed up the extra hands-free kit…

You Are Here

I was sitting in the whirlpool at the gym today, grousing over the fact that for all the places selling digital media no one offers a miniSD card – lots of CF, SD, MMC, xD, and Media Sticks though – and had an enigma pop into my head: how did I get here?

Another Candidate for State Number 51?

Reuters: Cuban Defense Minister Raul Castro warned the United States on Tuesday not to repeat its mistakes in Vietnam and Iraq by invading Cuba because its armed forces and civilian population were ready to resist.

Um, why would we want them? I mean, has someone been circulating a rumor that we’re planning to sack Cuba? Did I miss another memo? If anything, I would think that Raul would be asking us if we are going to lift our cigar sanction on his nation – not attempting to taunting us into a new offensive, by telling us that they’re ready to defend themselves… I just don’t get it.
