Star Wars? On DVD?

The Digital Bits: So check this out Force fans. This is no joke and we’ve bent over backwards to confirm it’s the real deal. Our very best industry sources have been checking in over the last couple of days – independently, I might add – with word that Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox are finally going to be releasing the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars films on DVD… good old regular DVD… sometime in the second half of this year. You read that right – the original THEATRICAL versions. THIS year. The ones that George Lucas for a time insisted no longer existed. Look for the films to be sold as individual 2-disc sets (there may be a box set as well), and look for the official announcement to come soon, likely in the next week.

Call it irresponsible for me to repeat “news” from a page called “Rumor Mill” but I couldn’t help myself. Especially for something like this. After all, I did take the time to back up my VHS version of the original series to DVD…

Update: It’s official – September 12th. Each movie is coming out as a two-disc release: uber-modded and original. Limited time release, but anyone that cares would have it on that first week. That and the new LEGO Star Wars II game.

What can I say – I like that Han shot Greedo first.

  1. Awsome, I heard that all 6 are going to be rereleased in theaters soon in 3D. Hopefully the original versions and not the BS ones they released for DVD before.

  2. I’d love to see the originals in 3D but I doubt it’ll be those releases… it’ll probably the fancy-shmancy digital special editions. Again. Meh.

  3. Yeah that’s my guess too. Lucas said he would release one a year begining 2007. So at that rate, if they are released in the correct order, I’d have to wait til 2012 to see Return of the Jedi. Bummer. I’ll be an old man of 28 by then.

  4. hah, old man of 28. Trying being alive when A New Hope was originally released.

Anyway, I sorta understand Lucas’ obsession with “re-doing” the originals… it’s rather unique to have a “second chance” with your life’s work AND have people be interested in it. My gripe is that he’s always tried to bury the original with the new, rather than just having a “oO look at the new version!” mentality. I’m guessing he’s realized how much more money he can make doing things this way ;)

  5. Hah! On the same day these come out in September, LEGO Star Wars II is getting released… and on the 360, if the web sites are correct. w00t!
