Oops: EA Edition

Kotaku: Madden 06 is totally on the fritz. The game doesn’t only emasculate linemen by making them tiny, it also randomly shuts off your PSP in franchise mode.

I gotta admit that the seven inch linebacker was a pisser, but it sounds like things are worse than just random issues with player stats…

Looks like I might have been more accurate with my assessment than I thought I was.

Say It Ain’t So Ho!

Card Squad: Westward Ho Closing Doors […] The Westward Ho, opened in 1963, is situated between the Stardust and Circus-Circus on famous Las Vegas Boulevard, otherwise known as ‘The Strip.’ The 700-room motel sits on a 12.3 acre property and is best known for providing low-cost accommodations and 99-cent hot dogs and margaritas. The ‘Ho’ will be closing their doors permanently on November 17 of this year.

Oh my. I stayed at the Westward Ho for my first Comdex back in 1996 – my company [at the time] was tied to the launch of Windows CE 1.0. Since we had no plans of going to Comdex that year – we had six in the company – we had to scramble to get a room on the strip…

Five Pounds of EA In a .62 Pound Package?

While I was working in the Mobile Space, I got into a number of arguments with a number of former VP’s about how to design a mobile application. They always argued over the overall design, how to get to the finished product, and why I didn’t know what I was talking about, since I didn’t like working in the Mobile Space in the first place. Sometimes I simply kicked’m in the nuts and called it good, but for the most part I would technologically shred them until they cried and then kick’m in the ding-ding for wasting everyone’s time, and in most cases, what precious little money we had access to.

Because I was right, plain and simple, when it came to the User eXperience on a mobile device. I’m not tooting my own horn here – I know what was good and more importantly, what was bad. Anyway, it’s looking like I’ll have to have a very similar conversation with EA over the PSP platform… After shelling out about $90 between MVP Baseball and Madden on the PSP, I fell that I owe them a kick in the nuts too, but I’d rather get them to fix their errors first.

How’d They Get Away With That?

Saw today on the news – via morning TV news so no blog to link to; how analog! – that Google was offering prime time video streams via the web. I hadn’t seen mention of it anywhere else though, so I took a peek at video.google.com. Sure enough, right on the front page, the entire first episode of “Everybody Hates Chris” is sitting there.

I clicked it. Watching it now. It’s the entire episode and it’s commercial free.

Now, how in the hell did they get away with doing that??? Is UPN that desperate for viewers that they’ve agreed to that? If not the RIAA is going to have a field day with this…

Problem is, search is ugly for video – do a search for “The Apprentice” and tell me how to find what you want.

Why Is It Always About 90%?

c|net: Google’s strategy […] Create a custom version of Linux, lets call it, gOS, so that lay man users can use it to check email, surf the web, include some office s/ware, a generic media player etc. This sums up about 90% of the features required by the typical OS user.

Oh for fuck’s sake… enough with this 90% bullshit.

Super-Trends!

For the most part a trend has to land on my head like a brick before I notice something, so I’m wondering if I’ve just encountered a bunch of weird coincidences or if I’ve noticed two new trends:

– Is it suddenly hip to put super as a prefix to everything? I’ve seen this happen all over manga, anime and some other Japanese stories in the early 2000’s, but I’ve been seeing it all over tech blogs lately. Makes my feet itch… I’m hoping it’s just a fluke.

– Is it suddenly trend to flip up the collar on a polo shirt? I know most styles get repeated every 20 years or so, but I thought this would be a 80’s only phenomenon… Much like Members Only jackets. I saw this repeated by different guys across a handful of weeks, but given that the bar is not known for it’s style, I can’t tell. They were younger “kids” so it’s not like the 60 year old dude – still wearing a Members Only jacket! – was flipping up the collar… Again, this too makes my feet itch.

Super-exicited that it’s that super-scary!

Nope – it still sucks.

Blind Faith

People have tried to tell me that some of the most stressful purchases in my life would be the “obvious” big ticket items. Car, house, wife, boat, etc. Not that you’d purchase your wife, of course – that would make life far too easy – but buying an engagement ring would be stressful… I thought the buying was easy – I’m fairly knowledgable about diamonds, oddly enough – but I certainly would have spent less money and time on it, if I knew I’d lose 20% of the original price when I had to return the fiancee ring.

While buying the home is stressful, it’s a long process, so the stress ebbs and flows… buying home improvements to said home is a freakin’ nightmare, given my recent attempt to buy a set of custom blinds.

Primo!

Sweet Jesus, the Yankees are in first place.

The Red Sox are a full game back in the Wild Card race.

I think I’ll take a moment to bask. Just a moment… because with the end game of this season, it’s obvious that almost anything is possible… better keep an eye on those Rays after all.

Fall baseball just kicks ass.

Whoa… Mobile Style

Furrygoat: What is Portable CE? Put simply, Portable CE is a ‘launcher’ for the Windows CE Emulation environment that can run an emulator-based Windows CE image from a USB keychain.

What’s new in Version 2.0? Here’s the killer part: Version 2.0 is now based off the new ARM based Device Emulator which can run native Pocket PC binaries. Yes, you read that correctly – with this version, you will be able to run most Pocket PC apps from emulation.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!
