Movie Fest

Popped out to see a couple of movies over the long weekend. Strange for both of us as we hadn’t seen a movie in ages, much less together… what with a backlog of DVR shows, a room full of DVD movies, and Xbox 360 related activities, it’s easy to forget that theaters are still there, collecting nearly $9 a ticket.

X-Men 3 was good, at least I thought so. Good for the genre at any rate. A nice follow up to X1 and X2, too. The Da Vinci Code was the other one – that was good too, again, for the genre. I thought the cinematography was exceptional in The Da Vinci Code – I knew the story already but the way the filmed it kept me guessing and jumpy. The other thing of interest was Tom Hanks in the movie… I think he was underutilized. Ya know how he usually drives the film? Not so much here. It’s almost like he dialed it back a notch to let the other characters drive the movie. Which is exactly how it goes in the book: Robert is just sorta along for the ride that other people send him on. So to that end he did his job well – the rest of the cast shone and was well picked.

To compare the two wouldn’t be fair but I will say that I went to pee during X3 and didn’t even think about it in The Da Vinci Code… that’d be a 3 second review, if I had to give ya one.

  1. I’m trying very hard to say that X-Men 3 did not suck. But it’s not easy. The first 2 were not all that great, but this one was a mess. It seemed like instead of working with some of the most complex and developed characters in X-Men, if not comics as a whole. They just killed them. I do not want to give anything away to anyone that has yet to see the film, but don’t go in with high hopes. They will be crushed.

  2. Funny… that they whacked a bunch of characters is what made it better than not to me. ‘specially since this was supposed to be the last of a trilogy, rather than “third in the line of X movies”. Guess we’ll see how well that theory works out ;)

  3. I heard they are making at least 3 more. One just on Wolverine, and one on Magneto and Charles (both prequels). And the scene after the credits proves they are going to make another X-Men movie.

  4. Those might be good, actually. The prequels at least – one of the best parts of the movie last night was the visit in NYC with Jean’s parents… at least I thought.

As to the last scene, it doesn’t prove anything, per se – it just leaves the door open if they decide that X3 made enough cash to justify an X4. I mean TV shows end with endings like that and don’t get renewed… it just gives’m an option. Time’ll tell.

  5. I dunno, I think killing off characters was a little on the sorry side. C’mon, one of the most powerful ones and poof! I think theres lots of stuff that was left open, and I’d look forward to another, I just think that for what it was hyped it was a lil’ dissapointing. And yea ticket prices are a bit high now too, not including drinks and popcorn!

  6. Maybe, maybe… I think it woulda been worse if they brought’m back thru a time machine or whatever… I find most shows/movies are too chicken shit to kill off major characters… this one was a little extreme but I thought it added to the story. The fact that a few key mutants were “cured” was nice.

  7. We are talking about someone that can move god damned planets with a single thought. It runs more along the vein of “In-fucking-possible” that a second rate bitch can off the guy. And yes most shows/movies are too chicken shit to kill major characters, but thats just American entertainment. People don’t like having their heroes killed. It defeats the idea of a hero if they aren’t invincible. The Japanese are more willing to hack there heroes to bits, and people see that as deep and humanizing writing. I see it as they just don’t know how to end a story. And it seems like that is what they did in X3. And there is a golden rule in comic book deaths. You can’t kill a character you did not create. Most writers abide by it, and the ones that don’t are often looked down upon. Because it looks like they are just doing it for shock value. Again, what they did in X3. Now if you excuse me, I am starting to feel my pulse in my eye lid, that usually means I need a nap.

  8. I was thinking killing off characters in terms of TV and movies – not comics as I’m not that deep in comic knowledge so I can’t speak to that. I just know that when they whacked off a few people on shows like Babylon 5 and 24 it made me go “whoa, didn’t see that coming” and sorta dispells the Star Trek Red-Ensign theory (only extras get killed off).

Anyway, with the cure being permenant, that IS interesting. I’m wondering if it’s a side effect of him having been hit with four needles rather than one. Or if they would spin a “he’s just that powerful”. Or it’s just generally “non-long term”. Should be interesting if (or when) they walk up on an X4 attempt.

  9. Well, he had his powers back at the end of the film. Remember how he was moving the metal chess pieces? And I didn’t think it would be permanent considering that leech’s effects seems to fade when the mutants lost contact with him.
