Rare Comment

Yahoo! Messenger: Built from the ground up specifically for Microsoft Windows Vista, this all-new version combines the reliable and easy-to-use features you’ve always loved from Yahoo! Messenger with the cutting-edge experience of this new operating system.

Holy crap – it looks like it might not suck!

FWIW, I stayed on MSN IM Windows Live Messenger all these years because of it’s interface…

Yahoo! Messenger: too busy and ugly emoticons that took four keystrokes.

AIM: Ads are WAY too invasive… too busy, tries to do too much and ugh on the style of the UI. I mean, Windows 95 called and they want their UX back. Whee!

ICQ: I’ve hated with great hate ever since the first time I saw the goofy asinine flower icon.

Horrific IM client.

iChat: Too cartoonish for my liking… all that dead space between the lines of conversation drives me insane.

Combo clients: i.e. Trillian or whatever… not too keen on it. I mean they’re fine for text and multiple account support, but screw it: 99% of the ppl that want talk to me have WLM, so there you go. Besides, none of the emoticons come over right and those are as good as punctuation for me in IM.

Besides, I’ve liked the direction that WLM has gone in over the years, including the very orange beta of 8 – nice balance of features without trying to do too much. Been a good experience. Well except for that display background thing, but the saving grace there is that you don’t have to use that.

However, now there’s a Vista specific version… if it’s really been re-started, it might not be feature bloated either. Could be good.

It’s often I give such praise to a new product, especially when I haven’t tried it yet, but, there it is: may v.Next suck less then v.Now.

Time’ll tell…

  1. I’m not at all sure this is how I’m supposed to leave you a question, but I’m running late and don’t see a straight-ahead link to do so.
Anyhow, I’m a long-time fan and user of sharp keys. (Cap Locks is my kryptonite).
I’ve pretty much had it with MS lately and am switching over to Linux Mint. So far, so good, but Sharp Keys was written for Windows. Is there a Linux version available?
    Thanks!

    1. SharpKeys was written for Windows because Windows is what is performing the remapping; SharpKeys is just an app that makes setting that key a little easier.

That said, glad it’s worked for you in the past, but there’s no chance of this becoming a Linux project.
