Ow – Temporal Edition

Finding three hours of MTV cerca 1983 via Wil Wheaton: Good.

Hearing that you can order music over the phone or “be the first to get MTV in stereo” via the commercials: Better.

Realizing that you just shared the link for said video with someone that wasn’t born when it initially aired: Downright fatal.

Um. Really?

MSNBC: Sen. Kennedy, Rep. Kennedy endorsing Obama – Ted Kennedy’s support was sought by all the Democratic hopefuls

Um. Really? I mean does the endorsement of a Kennedy really matter? Teddy is so pickled at this point he could be a Vlassic spokesman and what has his family done for us in the last… what, 20 years? 30? I mean some headlines for TMZ, sure, but does that carry weight? I would think that Obama is currently hiding in his office, figuring out how to minimze the effects of the endorsement.

Then again, all of the Massholes can hardly think for themselves – I’m sure it was a Kennedy that sold them on Boston burying all of their highways, too.

New York had better deliver on Sunday.

How To Read Financial Results

Dear Apple Fans,

Congratulations on Apple’s fiscal report yesterday! It is truly great to be excited when the company you’ve pinned your hopes and dreams on has gathered more profit than they ever have in the history of the company; it’s certainly better than having to show a loss. However, I caution you to remember that just because Apple has posted big numbers that it means absolutely nothing financially if the they didn’t meet their current forecasted numbers and they felt that they should lower their forecast numbers for the next reporting period. Consequently, uh, you have nothing to really celebrate at this point. And yes, my portfolio reflects this with a whole lot of red numbers following a watch list line that starts with AAPL.

While it’s OK to be happy that the company has sold a lot of Macs, iPhones, and iPods, they have still screwed the pooch in the fiscal sense. Just thought that you lot in the fan base would want to know… assuming that you didn’t get your skivvies sticky already, it might save you some time doing laundry considering the somber message of the financial report.

HTH!

Cause and Mass Effect

Joystiq: Keighley takes on Fox News’ seXbox seXposé

This one is worth a look, honestly because I love the fact that they parade this woman out in front of the camera to talk about how a video game is making 13 year old boys look at women as objects of desire. Right, because their own dropping balls don’t do that. And they wouldn’t have the slightest reaction to the bumping and grinding of MTV. Or certainly not from Cinemax after 11pm.

No, obviously the sole culprit is a video game that shows no nudity unless you play through the entire “choose your own adventure” storyline with a sense of romantic interest. If you act like a dick, you don’t get into the romantic subplot. As the game expert states “you don’t put the game in and it asks you ‘do want to have sex?'” That coupled with the “have you played the game?” ‘No [of course not].’ “So how do you know what it’s like?” exchange actually made me snort. That one of the panelists late in the ‘cast says “I don’t understand why [the ESRB] didn’t give it the highest rating of Adults Only” – uh, maybe because they played the game and got the rating right and you lot all are simply repeating what you’ve heard is in the game, rather than what the game really is?

Personally, I love how the debate and the after interview panel all agree on one thing: it’s obvious that this is a new problem – one caused by the game. In fact, it’s the game’s fault for parents not taking responsibility for their children’s upbringing and what their children do. Oh, sorry, did I just drip sarcasm on your shoe?

Classic newscast.

Seeing Is Believing

I finally got a chance to see Clerks II last night. Gotta admit it: it was weird seeing Randal and Dante in color but I still enjoyed the movie. The ties to Clerks and Dogma (as well as the other Smith movies) alone was worth the time – there were even a few scenes that made me laugh out loud. I was also amused that an old Burger King was used as the Moogb mock up… Besides any movie with a donkey should be an insta-classic (see Bachelor Party, The Godfather, and Shrek for supporting arguments.)

However, the big take away for me was the scene on the roof where Becky teaches Dante to dance. I dunno what she was wearing up top but… well… Wow.

Living proof that Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 did in fact have a reality-based physics engine rather than a fictional one.

Just sayin’.

NOM NOM NOM – I CAN EATS WURDZ?

oO, a yummy collection of words I get to eat!

I took some advice from Steve and ordered the HDMI->DVI cable from XtremeMac, even though I didn’t want to. Even though it shouldn’t have mattered. Even though I had an HDMI cable and a HDMI/DVI converter that said it was DVI-D… pins to pins and all that right? Yeah, well, the new cable allows my Mac mini to display to my TV via HDMI (and HDMI switch box).

So. For people that are looking for an Apple TV that allows you to rent/buy movies directly from the iTMS and play discs and support HDMI, there is an option: the Mac mini*

MacBook Air

I sat on this one for 24 hours because I wanted to make sure that the Jobs Distortion Field had dissipated before talking about a new Apple product.

I have to say that the design and the specs of the MacBook Air (MBA) are rather impressive on many levels. The big questions are “do I want one?” Well yeah, because it’s shiny. “Do I need one?” No, because I just got a brandy new T61p from Lenovo. “Will I buy one?” I don’t know.

“How hot does it get?” No one knows yet.

“It Just Works,” My Ass

I’d been putting it off for a while, but I finally went ahead and picked up an HDMI Switch Box. Wait, didn’t I already have one? Yeah, I did, but that was for Component inputs… since I got that back in 2006, my needs have changed. I don’t need more than two Component input these days: one for my Wii and one for my DVD player. Everything else that is video related can go HDMI.

Or so I thought – my Mac mini is causing me all sorts of trouble… yes, Apple is causing yet another problem in my electronic world.

As usual.

+1 iPhone?

Gizmodo: Apple iPhone Starbucks Ordering Screens Look Like the Real Thing, Precede Apple Patent

If this is the real deal, Apple may have a new iPhone customer.

Putting up with a touch screen device, shelling out $400 for a disposible device (as all phones are), transfering my numbers to at&t and paying more for service is all incidental for being able to cut yet another mammal out of my day to day life.

Green Isn’t Always Good

Fortune: Melinda Gates goes public

An interesting article… I mean most people would be jealous of BillG for his success and cash… after reading this, they’d have missed the target and hit the tree.

Either way, here’s proof that every proper Geek needs a really good woman to offset a digital lifestyle.

Bug: Google Language Tools

Whoo, is this a strange bug in Google’s translational engines… I’m not sure what Brazil’s Major Nelson [my boss] was up to, but he came by today and said, translate this with Google’s engine – translate it from English to Italian and see what you get:

Nintendo Wii is the best videogame

In Italian, I got: Xbox è il miglior videogioco. Translating it to Portuguese, I got: PlayStation é o melhor videogame. French, strangely enough, passed it through OK.

Methinks someone has a translating engine bug in a couple of languages, not that I don’t appreciate the free advertising. *g*

Controlling TiVo HD With A Harmony 880

Warning: this post is as much for me as it is for you! I’ve spent a chunk of time setting up my Logitech Harmony 880 remote and wanted to note the settings in the strange event that I lost my account…

Nothing else to see here, move along.
