Bad Beat FTW!

Ahhhh! A poker post! It has been a while but this was what was likely to be a once in a lifetime this… after all, I don’t play in non-tournaments games in casinos very often and you need to play in cash games to qualify for the jackpots…

This was easily the most exciting event to happen to me in a casino (and that includes the night we had the Las Vegas police department show up at the hotel door, responding to a complaint.)

Poker Sometimes Sucks

I played a bit tonight. Two and a half hours, actually, in a tournament of 42 people. Top seven would be paid; I got knocked out at 20th, which has become an all too familiar story, over the last nine months… my middle game has been ass lately – I get tired and sloppy. Or worse, I get tired, sloppy and all emotional – bad combination for poker playing.

Tonight, though, I’m a wee bit frustrated and I think it might even be justified.

Friendly Poker Etiquette

Had a small part of my east coast ire poke through my laid back west coast veneer during a poker game last night… I don’t think it was my fault – in fact, I think it was warranted – but it caused a little lull in the friendly banter at the table. If it’s any consolation, I feel sorta bad about that aspect of it, considering that it’s supposed to be a friendly game, but still…

Yeah, I think it was justified.

Poke Her? I Hardly Know Her!

Given the recent popularity of poker – Texas Hold’em or otherwise – I have to say that the run just continues to astound me. You see, I grew up around cards – for the two of you that have actually read Memoirs of an Italian Geek I can confirm that the bit about how I learned how to count with “ace two three” and stopped at eleven because I knew “jack” wasn’t a number is a true story. In fact, I learned how to add by playing black jack with one grandfather and I later learned ratios by talking about craps with my other grandfather [betting the 6 and 8 typically pay 6:5 which isn’t all that common in math class].

All this poker awareness this has led to a few observations in my poker abilities and other such skills.
