Software Tip of the Day: Office 2003

Love this one, honestly: in an Office 2003 document – i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint – hold down the Alt key and click a word. This will lookup that word in the Research pane, which includes a Dictionary and Thesaurus.

The only downside is that I’ve had this app for over two years now and I’m still finding new tools within it…

More Info on MSN-IM 7.5

I’m Just the Messenger: Leah has a whole bunch of information on the feature set that’s included with MSN Messenger 7.5… she’s also got some information on a patching option, if you don’t want to download the entire install.

I didn’t even know that was an option, since I’ve been running beta builds before the RTW release, but it’s a pretty good idea for the few yet poor unfortunate souls on dial up.

<subliminal> go download it, now. </subliminal>

Look Ma! One Hand!

Gizmodo: I’m not sure why you can’t just cut up a bottle or something, but the P-Mate is the latest in feminine empowerment aids. It’s a foldable pee pee that you can pee through and then throw away. Why would you want this, you ask? Well:

“This is a revolutionary product that has taken Europe by storm. It allows women to pee standing up, just like the boys, giving a whole new slant on equal rights for women”.

Um… yeah, I have no comment.

Judge a Rants Fan?

CNN.com: A juvenile court judge shocked prosecutors by setting bail at $250,000 for a 12-year-old boy charged with firing a gun in the city.

The district attorney’s office had asked for $5,000 bail when the boy was arraigned Tuesday on a juvenile weapons possession charge.

Judge Paul D. Lewis said he had lost patience with youth violence after 23 years on the juvenile bench.

“These kids don’t take responsibility for anything,” the judge told The Boston Globe after Tuesday’s ruling. “They’re fearless. It’s out of control. It’s beyond out of control.”

I’ve often wondered if anyone else read my blog… this might be proof-positive.

PSP 2.0 Firmware Released!

Attention PSP owners: put in a memory stick with 16MB free and go to Network Update on your PSP… the new firmware is live via the PSP, even though the Sony web site is showing 1.52 still.

Downloading now…

Forgive the blurry picture – the flash would have reflected off the PSP’s shiny face. But I have to say the blog renders on it really well… and the new keyboard input methods are nearly usable.

AutoHotKey

One of the most commonly asked questions about SharpKeys is “can I remap a shift-key to another key” – something that wants to move only a modified part of a key… like leave 5 where it is but remap %. Since SharpKeys simply exposes the built-in remapping technology of Windows, and Windows only remaps whole keys, this is something that is impossible with SharpKeys.

However, DownloadSquad has found AutoHotKey. This remaps keys on an application by application basis and does a whole lotta stuff… it’s also open source and free, and according to DownloadSquad, rather Geek-centric.

Might be an alternative if whole key remapping doesn’t help ya out.

PSP Version 2

Hi Sony… long time no talk. Sorry I haven’t written you lately, but I’ve been busy running from Blinky for the last week or two… I do feel we need to have a little chat, though.

While I can openly admit that I do not completely understand the Japanese culture nor the lunar calendar, I feel obligated to point out that in every country of the world, a week is exactly seven days. You told us you’d have the 2.0 version of the PSP firmware available during the week of August 15. That week is now over. And as per usual, you’re shafting the “good” people that opted to not jump on the Japanese version of the firmware, following your suggestion that we wait… this is bordering on unacceptable.

Give me bits. Now.

Brundle-ian Moment

I cannot believe I actually took the time to pluck a grey hair off the top of my head this morning. The three that have continuously grown back in my goatee are easily dealt with, since they’re right there, but still, this somehow felt completely ridiculous.

And what the hell is the point of hair that grows out of your hair lob and on the outside of your ear?

Aging. Feh.

“Wow! Why Aren’t You in Windows Mobile?”

“Wow! Why aren’t you in Windows Mobile?”

This is a question that I’ve been asked every couple of weeks over the last year, as more and more people pop into my office for phone advice.

It’s a short answer, really, but there’s a long telling to get it.

Health Break

Khaleej Times: Scientists in Australia’s tropical north are collecting blood from crocodiles in the hope of developing a powerful antibiotic for humans, after tests showed that the reptile’s immune system kills the HIV virus. […] “The crocodile has an immune system which attaches to bacteria and tears it apart and it explodes. It’s like putting a gun to the head of the bacteria and pulling the trigger,” [Adam Britton] said.

Methinks a certain biologist has been playing too much Halo…

Had to share.

Hate. You. Guys.

Forbes.com: The digital equivalent of homemade tapes are the next target of the Recording Industry Association of America. […] The RIAA has lamented the decline in CD sales by blaming file-sharing networks and other methods of illegal downloading.

Maybe if the Recorcing Industry didn’t jack up their prices and over charge the public for the last twenty years, more people would still be buying music in brick and mortar stores! It’s cheaper to make music, it’s cheaper to produce CD’s, it’s still a field flooded with talent, and you’re charging more than ever before! You’ve been anally probing us with a Buick and now that we have options, you’re crying poor.

Fuck you tossers. You suck.

And while passing around a liberal amount of Geek-hate this morning, sorry about pointing to Forbes, but only they had the story. They’ve made it impossible to read their content due to ads – in page, popup and pop-under alike. In fact, don’t bother to click through – it’s just RIAA whining about the season, much like the movie industry. Fuck the lot of them.

Hey, Forbes, you suck too.

Booyah! Greek Pizza Sighted!

w00t! Opa! I finally found a [mostly] proper Greek-style pizza place in WA!

Drove past Acropolis Pizza and Pasta while in Kirkland over the weekend – I keep forgetting that town is nearby… I seem to spend more time in Bellevue or Redmond – and since they were closed on Sunday, I decided to wander back today…
