Sight, Beyond Sight

Call me annoyed.

I’ve got a 18″ LCD at home and have had it for a while. For such a long while, it only supports VGA – as in no DVI – but it’s OK: I don’t spend much time on my home PC: remote desktop has helped me stay on the couch, while checking email. At work, I have a 17″ Sony LCD. It’s got a thin bezel and a DVI cable, so it’s pretty clear. Rather sharp, in all honesty. Also has an adjustable neck which is key.

17″ is small. Very small, given the amount of stuff I have on a screen at any given time. It’s the nature of development: compiler, bug window, email are all running at once. Bigger screen LCD’s have been on a market for forever and a day… so I asked for a new monitor at work.

The end result? I’m now so very, very close to buying my own monitor at work that it’s really pissed me off.

God Forgive Me

Has anyone noticed all of the civil unrest in the world lately? If you have noticed it, have you also noticed that it’s mostly religion related? I did. Just today. When I noticed the new round of unrest in Iraq is religious based and arguably the worst fighting since Saddam.

Is religion outdated?

Lack of Research: Origami Edition

The blurry line between blogging and news reporting is getting worse with each passing day… guess it proves that people will believe anything if it’s written down. Like if someone takes the time to write it, it’s got to be true.

Could you imagine that? All your base are belong to me!

Why Do We Do This?

I’ve been slacking over the Olympics this year, which is sorta odd. I’m usually an Olympics junky, especially when the host city is in a conflicting time zone. I remember staying up to all hours for the 88 Summer Olympics – had to keep an eye on the medal count – and remember watching the 80 USA hockey team win in real time, since it was in NY.

This year, I’ve just been picking up random results from the ‘net and watching whatever interviews are being shoved into the morning newscasts… the TV interviews have made me sorta jaded recently, actually. Maybe it’s because I’ve only been seeing the recaps, but it’s the TV interviews that lead me to the question of: Why Do We Do This?

Xbox Live Gadget

Furrygoat.com: Now that the February CTP for Vista is public and Windows Sidebar has been unleashed to the masses, I thought it might be fun to walk through creating a simple gadget. And since I recently joined the cult of the XBox 360, why not put together a gadget that showed my XBox Live gamercard.

Sweet! I’m guessing the gadget will have a game card that looks like this, hanging off the Sidebar. If you follow Steve’s instructions, that is. I think… I gotta install the Feb CTP for Vista and spend some quality time with it, soon.

SDA Tweak

A while ago I compiled a CAB file for my MPx200 that removed all of the cheesy AT&T Wireless images that appeared on all of the confirmation dialogs with the original “standard” Smartphone images. All of the original images were in the ROM, so it was just a matter of changing a bunch of settings in the registry; using a CAB file was the best way to do this, since an uninstall of the CAB would restore the OEM images.

It worked well on the MPx200 and the SMT5600 – was so-so on the T-Mobile SDA. One of the GIF files that was included in the last three releases of Windows Mobile was left out in this release, or at least in this OEM’s release. This caused me to update the CAB file.

Sorry – the update has been lost!

Cock. Bite.

FOXSports: Outspoken Everett will shake up quiet Mariner — He hadn’t even started his first Mariners workout, and already Carl Everett was spicing up a bland Seattle spring training.

I’ve long said that if I went to an M’s game that I would root for them, unless they were playing the Yankees. What’s more is that I’d wear an M’s jersey if they were playing the Red Sox. And that’s saying a lot: I’ve never worn any other team’s MLB jersey. Ever. It’s true! The only two baseball jerseys I own that are non-Yankees are an independent minor league team in CT and a New York Rangers branded one. That aside, there’s no way in hell that I’m ever going to root for Carl Everett. The man is a cockbite and I won’t have any part of it.

Sorry Seattle fans – I can’t be even a little flexible on this one.

Vintage Steinbrenner

FOXSports: When baseball owners approved the World Cup in August 2004 at the urging of baseball commissioner Bud Selig, the Yankees abstained. “We don’t like it that well,” Steinbrenner said. “If a player gets hurt, he’s risking a lot. But it was Selig’s idea and he wants to do it, so I suppose we’re going to do it.” […] “Sure, there will be some more back out, whether it’s our players or somebody else’s,” Steinbrenner said. “I’m used to spring training being to concentrate on the World Series, and that’s what we like to see our players do. But we don’t tell them not to play.”

Steinbrenner was sitting in a golf cart as he answered questions, and the 75-year-old owner kept trying to drive away as reporters and camera men surrounded him. “Don’t let me run over you,” Steinbrenner said to the group.

Vintage George – attaboy.

Praised Be The Phone Gods!

In spite of a previous post I have a new T-Mobile branded SDA sitting in front of me. I knew the local TMo store had them in stock, but they were mean to me when I walked in to check out the size of it: they offered an additional rebate on the phone in exchange for a two year commitment with T-Mobile. Dirty pool!

And in spite of my reservations about another candy bar phone… well. It’s a better upgrade than I thought it would be. Much better – so much so that I don’t even have the typical “I bought WHAT?” feeling this morning!

Washington-ism #2: d1gg t3h l33t

I just spent five minutes circling for a place to park at my building at work, as if it was Saturday afternoon at a mall. Ironic, since I had left campus to stop by the mall during lunch, where there was more than enough parking. It’s become clear to me that the general rule of thumb is if there are supposed to be people somewhere there will be a lot of them – no half way. I guess Geek reproduce like rabbits, when kept to one region.

I was happily reading a book on the elliptical at the gym, when someone got on the machine directly to my right. I looked over and noticed a bit of scrolling black ink on her left arm. It looked sorta like Arabic but not quite… in fact, I thought it looked rather Tolkien-ish. I said, “Excuse me… is that Elvish?” and got a “Yes!” with a high five in return. Proof positive that a large Geek population is a healthy thing. Sorta.

Only in Washington.
