For any day, really, but today is Friday. President Bush is in town. The opening ceremonies of the 2004 Olympics is currently on… granted they were recorded nearly 12 hours ago, but I still like to watch them. Been a full day.

Lo! I Am Furious
I really get annoyed when a word gets over used, like when people throw around the word love or hate or fury or rage. By over using it, it starts to take on a lighter version of itself. Take someone that says they hate lemon… is that person willing to destroy every lemon he encounters? Remove lemon trees from the planet? Pee on every piece of lemon candy they encounter so no one can enjoy it? No… instead they would just avoid the fruit when offered it. That’s hate being used in a way that makes it a lighter version of itself. Having said that, I can honestly tell you that I am furious.

Why I Wish I Didn’t Register to Vote This Year
One of the things I find to be neat about being a registered independent is that you can’t really take any blame for the two candidates you end up with in November. In years past, I’ve felt this was a bad thing – that you’re left out of a process because you’ve opted not to be partisan – but this year, I’ll wear it as a badge of honor. In fact, I’m almost sorry that I registered to vote in WA, as irresponsible as that would have been.

Wait… I Get to Like Nomar Now?
My contempt for the Boston Red Sox is second only to my love of the Yankees. The two feelings are intertwined, in fact, and a good deal of the pride that I feel for my pinstripes comes from their ability to beat down Boston… seemingly whenever they just decide to. And so for years I’ve watched Nomar play for Boston, with a certain contempt for the player. This year, I watched them talk about trading him in the Spring and then while his fellow players doubted his abilities, I then watched him work to support his team in spite of both issues – admirable behavior, to be sure. And now the poor guy goes from a team that hasn’t won it all since 1918 to a team that hasn’t won it all since 1908, but Chicago should be glad to have him.
Amazing what a change of uniform can do for your opinion of someone.

Reloading… MT, an iPod, and Me
I’ve re-installed MT on this server… I was hoping to see some speed improvements, but I’m not very hopeful. I’ve also nabbed one of those the new iPod, even though my old one was only half a year old, and that caused me to reload iTunes. And then there’s me: having to re-re-re-re-re-install more OS’s at work more times than any mortal should and having to survive three different attempts are importing my data back into the server… it’s been a long week already.

Today, On Today
As I’m sure most people have heard already this week, the current Governor of California (go Ahr-nald!) has come under criticism for calling an obstinate group of Democrats “girly men”. And of course it got some airplay. For two days now – who could pass up a political Schwarzenegger snafu? Because there couldn’t possibly be anything else going on that deserves to be on the news. I had the misfortune of seeing some more coverage on today’s Today show.

Karate Kid… Time Paradox?
How odd, to see a movie like The Karate Kid be mentioned with something that is typically associated with science fiction, but I think it fits. You’ve all see the three Karate Kid movies. I know you have. It’s not scientifically possible to have missed them all, if only because they’ve been replayed on cable stations galore for years. What you probably haven’t noticed is how great the casting was for the entire trilogy.

Washington-ism #1: Makes Ya Go Hm
Having been watching the news for just over a month now, I have to admit that the WA state government is a real-time experiment in modern politics. And quite often it makes for a better comedy scene than sitcoms or reality does… by no means does this mean that the populous shouldn’t be involved in the government process, but it does mean that the elected officials might want to move a bit more slowly on certain topics. That’s all.

Gay Marriage Revisited
And so there was a proposal to amend the Constitution so that same-sex marriages would be considered illegal. And it failed to be passed, with the support of 48 votes (50 voted not to pass it and 2 were caught in the john during the vote) – I also think that Amendments need 2/3 support, so it was not a close margin. What does this mean? Simple: none of this will be decided before the election and we can expect a lot more press on this issue over the years to come… un-freakin-believable.
