Shouldn’t Movies Be an Alone Event?

I don’t understand why most people don’t go to the movies alone. Or worse, why people still go to the movies on a first date. Movies are geared for people to be alone, yet every time I mention to someone that I went to a movie alone, I get a shocked look of disbelief at my actions… and I don’t get that.

Just When I Least Expect It

I’ve been diddling with technology for over two decades now… I’ve seen the span of 4.77MHz to 4GHz in CPU speed. Hell, I can recall when I was shocked that Promise put a 286 chip on their caching IDE controller for 486-based machines. After a while, you begin to think that nothing technical will make you go “hmm” much less knock you out of your socks. Well, slippers in this case, but the effect was the same: I am simply amazed.

MT Shit the Bed. Again.

Insert an unhappy expression here. Between my hosting company and my blogging engine, my entire Blog went belly up about 10 hours ago. It’s back on its feet now and I think everything works. I know that I lost a couple of comments, but nothing too recent and nothing that matter, I don’t think. The question now is what to do about MT.

The Last Blog Post

No, not the last one ever – truth be told, this is the first “live” post that I’ve done in a while. The last few entries have been lounging around in the My Drafts folder and it’s been easier to post them (finally) than it was to write about new stuff. Now, however, I’m back online and getting back into the habit of being online!

Northeast-ism #3: Sandwiches

Ah, behold the notion of a grinder. What’s a grinder? Bad question to ask… there’s more names for a submarine styled sandwich than you could ever know, but “grinder” is one that’s particular to most of Connecticut. In fact, I’ve found that most people out this way are more protective of their sandwich names than they are over the debate of Coke being “soda” or “pop”. Which sandwich are you?

Ironic? I Think Not

For the most part, I was out of work in CT for about eight months, before I landed a full time job in WA [state – grr]. While I was unemployed, I landed a couple of contracts that helped pay the bills, but for the most part, I wasn’t having much luck with recruiters. Now that I’ve moved to the Left Coast, I’m amused by the onslaught of recruiter emails that I’ve been collecting over time.

Only @ Microsoft

I’ve been playing foosball for a long while now. I picked it up while I was working for Symantec; since then, whenever I join a new company, I always lobby to have a table brought in for “in house” entertainment value. Besides, most people like to play it and it’s relatively inexpensive (as far as gaming tables go). Interestingly, Building 5 already had a foosball table in the 2nd floor “lobby”, where people can play during lunch and after 5pm – why the time limits? The table – and the players – make a good deal of noise that used to carry to a near by conference room, so most people only play after 5. What’s so strange or unique about this?

Computer-Related Darwin Award Candidate

Woe unto me. I’m nominating myself for a Darwin Award. Well, a computer-esque one anyway, seeing as I’m still alive. My work computer, however, is not because I killed it. And I had help too, but it was of my own doing: Microsoft didn’t hand me a loaded gun. Sure, there was a gun and yes there was ammo, but I loaded the weapon, pointed it at the hard drive, and pulled the trigger on my own. Yay for me!

Jetta Go Vroom

Jetta go vroom. Make Randy happy. Happy Randy is going to have to put block under gas pedal so Randy doesn’t get ticket in WA. [Randy is also parked about five buildings away from where he works, due to arriving in parking lot at 11am, so if someone on campus sees him wandering around looking bewildered, it’s because he forgot where he parked.]

If the Media Polices Government, Who Polices the Media?

Think about it. The media keeps on waving their forty year old We-Caught-Nixon flag as an “excuse” to burrow their noses into every little thing that they think they should be allowed to report on. OK, fine, I’m all for freedom of the press, but shouldn’t there also be some constraint shown by the media-at-large?

Happiness Is…

Happiness Is: feeling a surge of joy at seeing your main/home computer for the first time in ten days. OK, so it’s considered Happiness for a Geek, anyway. Extreme Happiness Is: the joy of having delivers arrive at your workplace three hours earlier than they originally thought they’d be there. Anyone expecting a deliver can empathize with that feeling. Of course, seeing as I forgot what I packed in two of the other boxes that arrived today, I’m also basking in that “I got a package!” giddiness that comes with mail ordering items.

I’m just hoping my Teva’s are in there, because I’m sick of socks.

The Last 48 Hours

I’m sitting in my temp housing, watching the sun hover over the water, and amazed that it’s 8:45pm and it’s still, um, rather bright out there. I’m without an active ‘net connection (and I think I hosed something else while trying to get the notebook on the LAN at work today), I’m out of Rainier cherries, and I desperately miss my cars and Teva’s [insert any sort of thing here]. However, as a change of pace, I’d rather focus on what’s been good that has been going on.
