And so begins the era of the Plug-In.

Some Re-runs After All?
Salt Lake Tribune: Much of the San Fernando Valley’s multibillion-dollar adult-movie business stopped production Thursday as it banned nearly four dozen actors and actresses from working after two tested positive for the AIDS virus, industry officials said.
Oops… good thing there’s “plenty” of DVD’s to deal with the coming dry spell.
The Apprentice Executive?
So Season 1 is done. Bill won, and hands down in my book. That Kwame didn’t shred the slackers on his team… well, slacking is so so but lying is far worse, and I agree with Donald on that: it’s one thing to be relaxed but I think Kwame was a step beyond that into negligent. Completely different management styles from two competent people: I just like Bill’s better.
My takeaway from it all? Thank God I didn’t get picked for Season 2… I would have would up with the new 18th hole in the water. Guaranteed.
Who Said .NET Was Slower?
I was working on a project the other day in MFC/C++ 6 and had to put 180,000 items into a ComboBox. Every Windows programmer that reads this Blog just collectively groaned, but there was a reason for it – honest. On a whim I thought I would see what would happen if I did the same test using C#, Windows Forms, and the .NET Framework; the results were surprising, given all of the “Why .NET Framework?” grief I’ve gotten over the couple of years.

Re-Runs? Hardly
It’s been just a week since I’ve last played Halo. I’ve been busy, I guess, with all sorts of things, the Easter holiday not being the least remarkable. Does that mean that it’s time for some re-runs? No, but I might dip into that “I wrote these a while ago” bag of Rants and run with some of those, so the site keeps moving along… some of those are actually pretty good and sorta timeless so I’ve got no issues with that – the only reason why they haven’t been posted is to spread out the Ranting a bit. But what else has been going on?

Female Psyche Or Just Ego?
I can’t figure this out (which is a common theme, lately). Not that this needs to be figured out… but it still bothers me, all the same. And I don’t know if this issue is something that’s inherent to a lot of women or if this “syndrome” is specifically caused by an overly inflated ego… in which case, it should be found in men too, but I just haven’t seen any male do this. I have, of course, known a number of women that have had this “syndrome,” so either I’m unlucky with the people I meet or that’s some scientific proof that there’s a hiccup in the female gene pool. The “syndrome” in question? The inability to believe that people will change over time.

To Everything, Spin Spin Spin
MSNBC: The wheel was spun, a crowd of supporters including his Mum and Dad from London went wild, the ball bobbled over the slots and landed on Red ‘7’ and Revell walked away with $270,600. “It all happened so quickly, it was spinning before I knew it,” Revell said, adding he did not intend to try to double it again. He gave a $600 tip to the croupier and plans to party, and buy some clothes.
Strangely enough, this took place down at the Plaza, in downtown Vegas. While some hotels down there are known to cover any bet (Binion’s Horseshoe being the most notable) the Plaza offers One-Cent slot machines and used to tote shag carpeting off the lobby… well, they did in as recently as 97. At least this daft bastard had the good sense to tip the croupier.
9-Year Old Arrested for Stealing Bunny
CNN: A 9-year-old girl accused of stealing a rabbit and $10 from a neighbor’s home was arrested, handcuffed and questioned at a police station.
Rather than pressing charges, I should send her Bing [my pet rabbit], who is nosing around my feet – and nipping at my legs – as I type this… that some how seems to be a more fitting punishment than incarceration would be.

9-11 Commission
Look, I’m all for reaming a government official if they screwed up something, and I’m still a bit off when thinking about the WTC attacks, but enough about it already. Right now, I just keep seeing the “who did this” and “why [the other party] should be blamed”. Shut the fuck up, all of you because you’re slowly giving me gout.

GUI’s Useless?
The other day, Steve was telling me about an email based debate over the “bloat of the Windows GUI” layer and how a computer should only ever need a command prompt to be useful. I was going to leave it alone – Steve is very much in the “we all need GUIs” camp – because the comment strikes me as completely ridiculous, but I decided to go ahead and comment on it anyway, if only because someone needs some digital pity.

Happy 100th Birthday To…
Happy 100th Birthday to… Times Square? It seems so, as I heard it on the news this morning. Seems the “local town green” of New York City was established one century ago today. I guess that this does make sense, given that NYC started at the southern tip of the island and it wasn’t until the late 1800’s that the city planners envisioned the mid-town grid as the city spread itself northwards… and Times Square, being in the near center of the “new grid system” at 42nd street, certainly wouldn’t be oldest landmark of the city: that would have to be south of Alphabet City and north of the Battery (since that’s built on man-made land).
I guess it just feels like it’s been there longer than that.
UConn Basketball
Men’s. Women’s. Priceless.
Of course, now that both teams have taken their respective championship titles, I’d love to see the men’s team play the women’s team in a “final” game. I’d put my money on the women’s team, actually, although I doubt we’ll ever see such a game: neither coach would want to be shown up by the other and I guess I can appreciate that… even so, it would be a hell of a game.
Plug-in Musings (And Do We Need a Beta 2 of 2.4?)
I had a thought the other day. Maybe it was today. It doesn’t matter, really, but I was thinking… wouldn’t it be neat to have a menu item that you could open a dialog that – when online, of course – let you enter a book title and have it return a link to Amazon? Or maybe a list of books, in the event that there’s more than one that fits. It’s very easy to do, with the Amazon XML Services interface exposed – and I’m certain that there’s other service to grab from online – but then I got to thinking some more, and now I have a quandary.

Hm: No Insurance Doctors?
CNN: Dr. Vern Cherewatenko is one of a small but growing number of physicians across the country who are dumping complicated insurance contracts in favor of simple cash payments.
As one forced to pay for his own insurance through COBRA, I’m all for it… if perscriptions dropped to a normal price point (as well as Dr. services) life would be very, very easy and – ultimately – better.
