The Prelude-to-a-Shot Heard Round the World

Visual Studio 2005, Beta 2 has been released. Express is available to the public; MSDN Subscribers have access to all of the bits. The problem I faced is “what to download”? Here’s a post about what the versions mean [via Firedancer] which helped me out a great deal…

PSP: Follow Up

I’ll have to admit it I guess: I’ve played with Twisted Metal on the PSP over the last three days more than I have with Halo 2. Could be because of the move or because it’s new to me – I don’t know which. Halo 2 is still a kick ass game, of course – better than Twisted Metal, in all honesty – but after so many months of it, I think I might have needed a little break. Besides, it’s nice to know that I can suck ass on a completely new platform… but there’s been some unexpected bonuses with PSP play… w00t!

RSS Ads?

Oh for fuck’s sake… I was going through my normal round of RSS reading this morning and noticed that a number of them suddenly started shoving ads in my face. One is from a family of blogs, so they’ve added a “brought to you by” cross promotion tag line on every article and someone else put what looks like Google ads in their articles…

Come’n bloggers… web ads did nothing but piss people off, so why clutter up an RSS feed with’m? I can sincerely promise you that nothing in any of these ads will get me to click through them. In fact, if I see a product in an RSS ad that looks interesting, I’ll go type the URL in myself so that you won’t get a click-through kick back. Just out of spite. Yes… I really do mean it.

I’m ads free – except for my book (which would make a great case study on how people don’t buy through ads!) – and I’m staying that way.

And the Hits Keep Coming

The releases just keep on coming this week, with this round coming from the web (and for free). MSN Messenger 7.0 has been released – so has MSN Spaces – both of which have been pretty stable through out their beta cycles. What’s new with MSN-IM?

<geekInformation>

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 has been released! As of this moment, you get pick up SP1 from Windows Update; MSDN Subscribers can also download the full version of the OS with SP1 built in… in addition to this, the 64-bit version of Windows has been shipped. For Windows Server, this is the 64-bit edition – one for AMD and one for Intel – in the form of 2003 with SP1, and there’s also a new Windows Client version: Windows XP Profession 64-bit edition (which includes SP2).

Halo 2 Update: New Maps in June!

News is up on Xbox’s web site – looks like $20 add on with nine new maps for Multi-player use and some other stuff. Nothing like a new venue to even the odds between players!

Of course this means I’ll have to re-learn where the sword is on each level…

Baka!

Confession: a new [to me] manga series sucked me in over the past seven couple of weeks and has eaten up a bunch of lunch hours… Usually, when I bump into a new manga collection that can keep my interest, it involves a massive spending spree on imported/translated books through multiple Borders visits, and I read’m during nighttime hours… This new series – MegaTokyo – is released via the web, so it’s free, much like RedVsBlue is [another one of my favorites, altho that’s more cartoon than anime/manga], but it requires a computer to read’m online… 685 episodes later and not only am I up to date with the story, but I’m hooked.

Time For Change?

Ya know this really pissed me off. I’ve had the same email address for just about ten years now. No, really: ten years – it’s easy to do when you own the domain… anyway, as Spam has gotten worse over the years, my ISP/Hosting companies have taken steps to filter out Spam. So have mail clients, first through add-ons, and then as part of the actual product, in the case of Outlook. It’s worked pretty well, in all honesty, and I’ve been able to survive.

The good news from all of this is that I haven’t had to send a “here’s my new email address” email in a decade. Hell, most people didn’t even know what email was, by the time I had my first address, so hurrah for me and my longevity. The bad news from this is that I’m getting Spam from myself, offering cheap Microsoft product and free alternatives to viagra.

That’s just wrong – might be time to change my [personal] email address, after all.

Mini Sighting

Was out for coffee this weekend and snapped this shot while waiting in line at Victor’s. Surprised to see a Mac mini sitting in a box at a coffee shop, I asked the woman sitting there if she had gotten it at the Bellevue Apple store (which is the closest Apple reseller to Victors). She responded that her husband had just given it to her for her birthday. And she was, well, beaming about it, looking very pleased with her man, at that moment in time.

I don’t know if it’s the area or just the current value of an Apple at this point in time, but either way, it certainly kills the whole Wilma-getting-pissed-at-Fred-for-buying-her-a-new-appliance-as-a-gift episode of the Flintstones, doesn’t it?

Second Look: Comcast DVR

RandyRants.com: “I just noticed that I COULD NOT Fast Forward, Rewind, etc. through “24” or “American Idol” when watching them via MyDVR last night. My neighbor reports the same thing… anyone got news on WHY Comcast is disabling this?! Thast’s a terrible move.” — Larry

Uh-oh. Anyone else want to weigh in on this? I don’t watch either show, so I haven’t seen this. Both are on Fox, so it might be a network deal that they made with Comcast – it could be particular for these two shows. Or it coulda been a malfunction (although I don’t think it was). Hell, it could even been something the Comcast is funking with – I’ll be TiVo’ing recording The Apprentice tonight, so I’ll try skipping around in it.

Complete bunk, if this is the coming trend for Comcast – maybe I’m not completely done with TiVo or ReplayTV, after all…

Update: More on this here thanks to Tommy. I’m also going to record “American Idol” on HD (FOX) tonight and see what happens… I won’t be watching the show tho. Honest.

New MSN Search

MSN Search has been relauched and looks to be pretty freakin’ good. The MSN.com home page has been revamped and personally, I like the new layout – a bit cleaner and easier on the eyes.

Why the plugs? As of yesterday if you searched for “Randy” I was the first in the list *smirk*
