I just realized that it’s Sunday night. I started working on a side-project early Saturday morning. Sure, I took some time to do some laundry, boost some coffee, and eat food (at least I’m assuming I did, since I’m not hungry) but for the most part, I spent the majority of the weekend heads down in front of a compiler. Upset? Ha – I had forgotten how satisfying coding can be… especially in the managed world, where a lot of the Win32 grunt work is done for you… that’s probably why I worked on this project rather than my assigned homework. *g*
And of course the question is “what project?” Something work related? Something SharpMT related? Something game related? Something that unlocks an iPhone?
I’m not saying – at least not right this moment, but I hope to show it off at GameFest in August: that should be a big enough clue right there.
Furrygoat: After 1888 posts, this experiment is pretty much over. I’m sure at some point, something will be back up here in it’s place, but it almost certainly won’t be a blog. Thanks for tagging along on the ride though.
And there goes Steve, riding off into t3h sunset… a sign of things to come? Is blogging so mainstream now that it’s become passé for the pioneers of blogging? I doubt it.
I’ve often said that chat rooms people never leave – they simply fade out of sight for a while only to return at some point. It’s a Randy Axiom, actually. It’s been proven world wide over the last 20 years… the question now is does this apply to bloggers? What controversial topic will bring Steve out of the void? Time will tell.

I don’t know much about Lohan. Maybe it’s because there were enough Paris headlines in the news that as soon as I saw that smug blonde face I clicked away a page or changed a channel… the most I knew about Lohan was that they had to digitally reduce her chi-chi’s for the Herbie movie because Disney was “concerned” about her figure being “too much” for young viewers.
Then I saw this on CNN today. And I have to say that I’m… I dunno what. Taking the star status, the girl-next-door face, and the popping chi-chi’s out of the picture this is what I’ve seeing: a woman that’s just got out of rehab for alcohol two weeks ago that turned herself into police for an outstanding DUI charge last Thursday only to then get arrested last night for DUI with a BAL of 0.12 – less than a week after rehab! – and possessing/using cocaine. All the while wearing a “alcohol monitor on her ankle as part of her outpatient treatment”. So her rehab made her turn to coke? Was the monitor actually a flask that beeped when she was drying out? And if she had to wear the bracelet for alcohol what do they make her wear for the “coming cocaine problem”?
If she doesn’t get chucked in the clink for this one I’m calling [a louder than normal] foul on all of Hollywood. “Pressures of filming”? She hasn’t worked in weeks because of rehab! Put her ass into a Burger King kitchen for three months and see how much she appreciates “the pressures” of acting.
Maybe Sharpton, Sheehan, or O.J. can get involved and help drive a worthy cause to do something about it before Lindsay drives over someone?
I have a copy coming from Amazon. I reserved a copy from my local Borders. I’ve heard $20 million in security to prevent leaks. [I may already know what happens in spite of this.] I’ve seen it all over news in all media formats. I went to Borders this morning a half hour after they opened to wait in line so that I could get a bracelet that would allow me to wait in another line tonight at midnight to pick up my copy. The line was around the corner, up the stairs, and down for 1/4 of the length of the mall, which rivals the line for Halo 2 back in November 2004.
I’m… amazed and in love with this.
And to that I give major kudos to Rowling. Sure there’s been this mania for movies, concerts, videos, and games. But a book?
This has got to be the biggest book launch of all time. Books have had been around for the last four thousand years – when was the last time that there’s been a buzz like this for a release? This is an amazing feat. Never mind the fact that she has gotten kids to want to read but she’s got kids, their parents, and random adults wait in lines for hours to read her work… it’s an awesome thing.

So why not try and address things in the testing phase of the game? Karla Starr, a reporter at The Seattle Weekly actually took a job as a tester with a game company, and went inside the the belly of the beast to bring us a real insider’s view of game testing.
Well no shit. I went to GDC and was… well, appalled by the view of Test and the views of testers in the industry at large. There were a couple of companies that were doing it “right”. During one of the round table sessions and I expressed my dismay at the majority of what I heard from other testers, I was told “Oh, no wonder… you’re with Microsoft.” I took it as a compliment, but it was an astute observation.

It’s not often that I ask the question “Why me?” because I usually know why things happen to me. A bad decision. Not checking the expiration date on a carton of eggs. Picking blue instead of red. Moving too quickly when I shouldn’t have; moving too slowly when speed would have helped. Over thinking or under thinking at the wrong times… Last night I was witness to an episode of my life where it can only be assumed that my existence on this planet is for God’s laugh track. Actually, I discovered my ultimate purpose before high school, but every now and again I’m reminded of it.
We had a pre-briefing on Monday before the E3 Briefing that happened last night… was I glued to the TV last night to watch it? Um, yeah. There were things discussed last night that even we didn’t know about. Like Disney content being added to the Xbox Live Marketplace. Or Resident Evil 5. Or Virtua Fighter 5. Gears of War on the PC? Oops, wait, I knew about that one *g* but I didn’t know about the new content in the game. Besides, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing people that I see in my cafeteria on a regular basis on TV… if anything I’m jealous that some people got to play Rock Band already… grr.
One thing that does amuse me is the “uproar” that Microsoft didn’t announce a price cut on the 360 console. I don’t get that. The Elite is still cheaper than the cheapest PS3 – and it has twice as much memory. I mean, it’s spiff for PS3 fans that they can save some cash, but I still think the 360 is a better bargain… especially with all of the titles that we announced last night. Nice, too, that all of the footage shown as in-game footage and not “demo” footage. So was the rock band playing Halo music live to open the briefing – that was really sweet.
It’s actually a very good review and that’s not because I agree with the majority of it all – it’s the over all level of content. Although, I think they’re observations on price a bit forgiving: after all, at&t isn’t subsidizing any part of this phone – the $499 and $599 prices are the real retail prices… usually you get a break when you sign on with a new contract, but I guess that’s the price of bleeding edge. I think they should knock more than $50 off the price to move the 4GB models, but seeing as they keep selling out, it’s a moot issue.
The simple truth is that I will share any review that can reference Rosie O’Donnell’s vagina.

Talk about a great marketing department, look at Alli: talented enough to sell shit and have people ask for more – that’s success.
Happy Fourth of July. And Happy Post iPhone Launch weekend. Sorry for the quiet time too lately – I finally got to take the vacation that got postponed from the end of April.
Rooster Teeth just released hit their 100th and final episode of RedVsBlue today. Pre-sales of the Season 5 DVD have already started, which is good… even though I’ve already seen all of the episodes online, I know I’ll buy one. I’ve already got the other four seasons – in fact, I got Season 4 signed at PAX last year – and it’s interesting to watch the episodes flow into each other, when you don’t have to wait two weeks for the next installment.
I’m sorry to see it end, but after… five years? Six? I didn’t think about it before, but RvB is why I found out about Halo in the first place. I remember watching the first episode and thinking “what a riot – this is just like being caught in a game of Tribes! I wonder what they’re using for animation… what game is that?” A little while after that, Halo for the PC came out and I bought a copy. Then an Xbox Halo Special Edition. Then the launch night of Halo 2. Then I joined the MGS group, and later the XNA group, and worked with the people that made Halo 2 for Vista. Then there was the Halo 3 Beta… hell I’ve even talked with some people from Bungie about some tech as part of my job, as random tasks take you random places…
It’s not often that you can identify The Butterfly that started a butterfly effect in your life – thanks to all the people at RoosterTeeth for a great show (and for helping to seed my wardrobe with all the different t-shirts over the last few years!)
I swear to God, if I read, hear, or see one more thing that mentions the iPhone in a way that is not related to something technical and newly discovered* I will wait in line at my local at&t store, get one, open the box, and piss all over it before they activate the service.
Beyond that, I can’t wait for the “I-Couldn’t-Place-A-Call-Cuz-I-Have-No-Battery-Having-Listened-To-10-Tracks” backlash that will eventually hit the street. Not to mention the general issues with first generation hardware, or have people forgotten the broken DS Lite hinge or cracked display nano while both were in it’s first generation of hardware? Or the irreplaceable battery. Or the lack of upgradable memory. Or the inability to thumb type with it. which a few reviewers have noticed already. Or the ongoing outrage at enterprise IT departments that won’t support it for a long, long while. Hell, even Safari for Windows has been patched twice in beta.
Does anyone honestly believe this will be a perfect launch with a problem-free product that “just works”, much less live up to the amount of hype that has been generated? Continue reading Just One More→
