Barbie versus Ken

In a story that seems fitting for Valentine’s Day tomorrow, I have a web page to share, courtesy of MSN: Barbie and Ken Split. Even worse than the story it reports – that Barbie is now sporting a more JLo-friendly image, plans to hook up with Blaine-the-Aussie, and that Ken is moving on to greener pastures – is the fact that this story has been made into a story in the first place. In fact, I only saw it because it was listed on MSN’s home page as a “story to be noticed”.

SharpMT 2.2 – Beta 5 (Release Candidate 2)

If you’ve installed SharpMT 2.2 Beta 4, please uninstall this version and use Beta 5. Beta 5 includes the new help system and bug fixes that were part of the Beta 4 release and it has removed the pre-compilation enhancements that have proven to be problematic with the code base. Please uninstall Beta 4 and use Beta 5 in its place.

Pre-Compiling a Bad Thing?

And from the Oops department: I’ve gotten a couple emails that point to a couple of articles that say that NGEN and pre-compiling is not a good idea for everyone. It could run into problems with newer versions and other types of issues… of course none of this was mentioned on the original MSDN article that I got this from – I know, because I double checked it, to make sure that I didn’t run off without reading everything.

As usual, the typical “speed versus ease of use” trade-off has fucked up a wet dream – and now new versions of both SharpMT and SharpKeys have been released.

SharpMT 2.2 – Beta 4 (Release Candidate 1)

A friend of mine could be quoted as summing up a feature list of a 1.1 follow-up release to a 1.0 offering as “Now with error checking”. In the spirit of such a comment, I am happy to present to you 2.2 Beta 4: now with a help system.

SharpKeys 1.0

SharpKeys is a Registry hack that is used to make certain keys on a keyboard act like other keys. For example, if you accidentally hit Caps Lock often, you could use this utility to map Caps Lock to a Shift key or even turn it off completely. The official release includes support for up to 104 mappings, an extensive list of available keys, and a “Type Key” option to help when managing mappings. As it relies on internal support within Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003, you must be running one of these OS’s for this Registry hack to work.

No More, Please No More Damned PowerPoint!

Rare statement warning (and I’ll deny it if anyone ever quotes it back to me) but I have to say it: I have a bit of respect for marketing people that are forced to rely on slides for their livelihood. It’s not PowerPoint’s fault because I’ve got nothing against the application. I’m just so sick to death of making slides at the moment that I never want to see one again – trust me, I would even hate Keynote by now. And if one more piece of text randomly tries to FlyIn at me, without my telling it to, I’m tossing the ThinkPad into Starbucks’ sink.

iPod, the Second Life

I’ve had gift cards collecting on my kitchen counter for the over a year now. I love the little buggers – hard plastic works out so much better than the old fashioned paper gift certificates (which are easily destroyed). I usually get a bunch of gift cards over the holiday season and I normally spend the first two months of a new year debating on what to buy. Last year I got too busy with work to think about it, which is why I had a surplus that included a mall-based card, a Filene’s card, and an AmEx-certificate. Today I went shopping for slippers.

Atkins Friendly Blog

OK, so finally people have begun to realize that carbohydrates are key to adding fat to their bodies. Every where I look these days I see “carb-blocker” pills and “Atkins Diet Friendly” menus and wonder where the hell has everyone been for the last ten years?! This “carbs-are-evil” mantra that everyone is chanting is not a new idea – I just wonder how they sold the mass populous on it lately because I’d love to corrupt that marketing machine and use it for my own nefarious efforts.

SharpMT – 2.2 Beta 3

After a number of sleepless nights (and foggy days) a new beta is ready. Main thing for this release is that SharpMT will only allow one instance of itself to run at a time now. The run-as-differnt-user for multiple blog support “hack” still works, though; only one instance can run per user. What this means is that if SharpMT is already running and your double click on an SMT draft or send data to SharpMT from an RSS Aggregator via the plug-in, it will open in a new tab in the already running window.

SharpMT – 2.2 Beta 2

Sorry for the second beta in two days, but there’s been a few things that were screwed up in the last build, so here’s a new one. Only changes in this release are bug fixes, so please see Beta 1 for feature info.

SharpMT – 2.2 Beta 1

The major feature for this release will be integration with major RSS Aggregator applications. If you don’t know what an RSS Aggregator is, then you won’t much care about integration with one. If you do, then you might be interested in seeing what this integration will get you. There’s also a minor bug fix for people that have been using more than one Text Formatting filters and the Preview tab.

SharpMT Plug-in: IBlogExtension

Ya know, this .NET architecture rules. Within an hour I’ve been able to create my first DLL – I’m usually more of an applications guy – that supports the IBlogExtension interface and is “seen” by SharpReader. Already. Within one hour. The question is where to go from here…
