Harmonic Upgrades

For over a year I’ve been using a Harmony 688 universal remote and been rather happy with it. Well, now technically it’s a Logitech Harmony 688 universal remote, since they bought out Harmony a while ago. It’s been a great remote. Nearly perfect, in fact.

So why have I recently tossed the 688 into a drawer, in exchange for another remote? Frankly, nearly perfect means that there’s a little bit of room for improvement. Besides… Logitech has released new products to the Harmony line!

Fashion Statement or Intelligence Challenged?

I can’t tell if it’s a fashion trend or not, but even if it is a proper trend, I don’t think it’s gotten to the west coast yet. Could be an east coast only thing, actually. Either way, I still don’t get.

Scratch and Sniff

FurryGoat.com: Anyways, after striking out at B&N, I was able to convince my wife to walk over with me to the Apple store to check out what was new. Wow – Complete chaos. The line was almost out the door. It always amazes me to see so much buzz still over the iPod and how just being in an Apple store makes me feel good. I spent some extra time just snooping around and watching people experience Macs for the first time, which is always interesting.

Mayhap. But what I really want to know, after visiting over a half dozen Apple stores in three different states, is why do they always smell the same? Hell, I can’t even identify the smell: it’s a cross between monitor-burn-in-smell, Windex, and some kinda plastic smell. I can’t tell, but I always know – by scent alone – that I’m in an Apple store.

Any Apple Heads out there want to shed some light on it?

Random Quotes From December

Some random quotes I wanted to share, from earlier in the month, since they all made me laugh…

“You know that character from Drawn Together? You know – the cartoon one!”

“Jeez! Your legs really are short!”

“Look! A pagan ritual tree!”

“We’re driving to Grandma’s house…” ‘Oh, you’re going to visit her?’ “No, we though we’d beep the horn as we drove by.”

Johnny Damon, Sans Hair?

Bronx Banter: While we were busy yesterday fretting over possible non-tenders such as Corey Patterson, Russell Branyan (both of whom were tendered after all), and Hee Seop Choi (who was re-signed by the Dodgers), Brian Cashman was cooking up a much tastier treat. Never mind Jason Michaels, Johnny Damon is coming to the Bronx. Get that barber’s chair ready.

Sure hope he doesn’t think he’s Samson… even so, it could be worse: the M’s sign Carl Everett. Grrr.

Political Eddies

Chris Sells: Bush sics the NSA on us w/o due process, starts a war so he can look tough for his dad and continues to dismiss global warming as a myth. Why aren’t we impeaching his ass?

While earlier today, jwz answers this very question: This is surely the most impeachable thing he’s done yet. But let me remind you why that is maybe not such a good strategy: Vice President – Dick Cheney

In Stores Now?

Happened upon this in my local Borders this past weekend… anyone recognize the label binding on that book in the middle? Let me give you a hint… it looks like this:

<subliminalMessage>

Buy me!

</subliminalMessage>

How it got there, I’ll never know, but it’s there now.

Sweet. Jesus.

FurryGoat via Yahoo!: Skirt-chasing playboy Daniel Anceneaux spent weeks talking with a sensual woman on the Internet before arranging a romantic rendezvous at a remote beach — and discovering that his on-line sweetie of six months was his own mother!

ahahahahahaha! *snort* Giggle!

Digital Musings

Recently, MSN Spaces has announced that they are now supporting external Blog writing tools for Spaces users. It’s some good news from for them: offline Blog writing is incredibly useful, especially in places that aren’t as wired as Washington.

So why is this a SharpMT post? I thought it would be nice if SharpMT supported Spaces…. home team and all that. Even though it has been tuned to support the MT Blog engine, I thought I’d take a peek and see what would happen if I pointed SharpMT to the Spaces MetaWeblog API… God, do I hate technology.

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

Went to see the movie on Friday… as is no surprise to anyone that knows me, this was a “must see”. After all, I read the books as a kid. All seven of the books. And what’s more is that I was sucked into it the same way The Lord of the Rings got me… I saw the 70’s cartoon. I saw The Hobbit and Return of the King – you know, the ones with all the cheesy folk music – and had to read the books to find out what happened between the two movies. Same thing with The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe: I heard there was a book and then that there were six other stories in Narnia… sucked me right.

How was it? Good. Better than I expected but not a complete “wow!” either… more after the jump (as it includes minor spoilers).

Xbox 360: Mountain Out Of A Grain Of Sand

boingboing via Gizmodo: Xbox 360 DRM makes your rip your CDs again — Microsoft’s new Xbox 360 has a dumbass DRM countermeasure: it won’t let you store MP3s on its hard-drive unless you rip your CDs again using your Xbox. My CDs are in a storage locker on a different continent — there goes the whole Xbox-as-Media-Center thing. Thanks, Microsoft, for putting paranoid record execs’ phobias ahead of your customers’ legit needs.

What the hell is he bitching about? That the Xbox 360 isn’t behaving like a server? Duuuuuh.

FurryGoat’s Law: +1 Proof

FurryGoat’s Law just got another case study for validity.

The Adventures of Teapot the Cat: rsstroom reader – toilet paper printer! A crazy new product out of Taiwan seems to be aimed at the feed dependent of us out there. The ‘rsstroom reader’ is a bathroom gadget that prints news feeds onto your T-P – that’s right, your TOILET PAPER! The best part is the “biometrics” toilet seat that’ll figure out who you are based on your weight and prints the news you want – not your roommates tabloid garbage. Going to the rsstroom will never be boring again!

I shit you not.

Smoke Free State: Now Active

Public smoking is now banned in the state of Washington, as of midnight this morning. Not only is it banned from public places but while smoking outside, you are required to be 25 feet from the entrance of any public building. At this time, tribal establishments are exempt from the law, as expected since their reservations are not subject to our laws.
