Yay! The Bitch is Gone!
After watching “The Apprentice” for nine weeks, that useless and whiny bitch (Omarosa) has finally gotten fired! And she couldn’t even go quietly! She had to go ahead and have a whole crying scene while waiting to go back inside the Boardroom and she ended up barging into the conference room before she was called for: big no no. Trump flipped at that, and quite rightfully yelled at her for it! Oh and if you watch “Today” tomorrow morning, I can promise you that “race” will come into the picture, even though she’s American like the rest of the candidates and, if she wants to play the African-American card, Kwame nominated her to be in the Boardroom.
Anyone know anything about that artist “Leah” that they had on the show tonight? The cute little Italian with the good artwork that WOPs like us can relate to? She was all types of goodness – pity she didn’t get more screen time…

Fire Sale?
What a difference a week can make. I know the NY Rangers have been sucking ass lately, but I’ve somehow gotten used to that, having been a fan before and after the memorable 1994 season. But this week. Wow. They traded off Nedved to Edmonton, then Kovalev to Montreal, and now Leetch to Toronto. Leetch. Who’s been there for longer than I dare remember. At least he’s going to a very active hockey town, but man, it stings. Since they’re selling off everything they own, I wonder if I can buy Messier for like two-fiddy or something…
AV: Why Norton’s Irked Me
Have you installed Norton’s AntiVirus 2004? I have. Can someone explain to me why six different processes need to be running to “protect” me from attacks? I mean, it used to just be just one simple process and that was only if I had Auto Protect on? No, you can’t explain it, so don’t even try.
For people that are running McAfee’s AV: is your scanner any better than this? I’m looking to trade up, and soon, I think.

A Bittersweet Starbucks Moment
Being single in today’s world is not an easy thing to be. In fact, it’s usually a very painful cross to carry, because society tends to treat single mammals like they are some sort of social leper. Everything in our society is geared to make you feel that being alone is wrong. That it’s somehow unethical or decadent or well, just plain wrong. Being single with kids isn’t as bad. At least you’ll have a “family” of your own and the empathy from other parents in the country, but if you use birth control, and are still single, then you may as well not even exist in society at large. At least, that’s what you’re led to believe, if you pay attention to how some people and the greater media tries makes you feel about it. I won’t have any part of that though.

DevDays 2004: Hartford
Hometown conference for .NET related technologies? How can you pass that up, even if it is $75 out of my own pocket; I didn’t even know companies out here were actively using .NET – they’ve usually heard about it, but haven’t moved to it yet (even though it was introduced in 2002.) The sessions don’t start for another half hour so I thought I’d share the experience – and more importantly what’s in the goodie bag – oh, and if you saw a slacker-looking guy in Donut’s Red Army T-Shirt wandering around the conference or typing on a ThinkPad you saw a rare public appearance of the Rant’r.

Howard Stern Suspended?
[New York Times]: Clear Channel Communications, the biggest radio broadcaster in the nation, suspended the Howard Stern show from its stations yesterday after announcing a policy to prevent the broadcasting of indecent content.
I never thought I’d see this again in the headlines, not after he found a home at K-ROCK and put most of this kind of crap behind him… anyone know what he said?
Literary Quandary
Here it is, in a nutshell: I’m having trouble selecting a textbook for my class and I’m looking for some Geek-feedback. The class is an Introduction to C#, for graduate-level CS students. I’m using it as an “overview” of the language, an introduction to Windows Forms and the .NET Framework, and I plan to offer a glimpse of Web Services, Mobile Forms and version 2 of C#. The problem that I face is the fact that most books either focus on C# as a language and ignore Windows Forms or they gloss over C# and focus only on Windows Forms. I wanted to try to avoid using two books – to save students’ money – but I fear I have no choice.

The Apprentice: Season 2
There’s something sorta surreal about watching your own goatee bounce while you talk on your own TV, babbling through a video resume, while you dub a Mini-DV tape to a VHS tape because that’s what the interview process requires. Am I sending it in? Well, why not? If only because it’s tangible proof that I’ve been interviewing at companies while looking for a job. Besides, I haven’t been on TV for a couple of years now and I figure I’m due: I’d rather pick where or when I appear, rather than seeing myself flip off Martha Stewart on Court TV or something.

Tuesday is Whitehead Day!
Fuckin’ OI. Have you been out driving on a weekday morning or afternoon lately? I run my errands now – as I have my days free still – and I find it to be far more hazardous that a weekend. I figured there would be fewer people on the road, what with the workforce being at work, but I didn’t realize that a whole gaggle of old people would be out the roads. I also didn’t know that Tuesday is Senior Citizen Discount day at every retail place in Derby (Connecticut) – anywhere that you try to get to will take you at least twice as long, due to the brigade of drivers that won’t go over 20mph. Do yourself a favor: stay at work on Tuesday unless you want to wade through a sea of white (and silver) heads at the local WalMart, IGA or Shop Rite.
Ghost 2003, a ThinkPad T41, and Me
IBM recently released a firmware upgrade for one of the hard drives that is used in their ThinkPad, this time out it’s for a 60GB drive that runs at 7200rpm. I have a similar drive – both are TravelStar drives, from Hitachi – and while mine is 60GB it runs at 5400rpm. Since I’ve had trouble with IBM’s Active Hard Drive Protection System (APS) – trouble as in I think it’s what has reliably, yet randomly, crashed my ThinkPad with blue screens of death – I’ve been eagerly awaiting a new firmware update… (the moral of the story is how neat Ghost 2003 is, but it takes a little while to get there)
