Last Call: SharpMT/Pocket SharpMT 2.0

Last call for bugs on both SharpMT and Pocket SharpMT for the 2.0 release! I haven’t gotten any new reports about broken stuff for about a week, so it must be doing pretty well out there. However, I hate making assumptions about such things, which is why I do stuff like this *points to the headline* in the first place. If anyone finds anything please let me know ASAP – I plan to kick this out the door either this Friday or the following Monday. And thanks for the ongoing support! Speaking of support, the SpellCheck Fund is now 30% full, so it might be a long while before I get to include it for everyone but I’m still hopeful!

Driver Found

A few weeks ago I get a letter from VW about my leased Passat. Seems they were offering me a chance to get out of my lease nine months early, if I leased another VW. I asked my father – who’s worked in the car business for over twenty years now (and given it’s been in either management or finance, he’s the de-facto resource for car purchase questions) – if this was really possible. I figured that they would take my remaining payments and roll them into the new lease or something. He told me that a number of car companies do this occasionally, to clear out the remnants of a model year, and since October starts the car year, it made sense. I now have a 2003 Jetta, but it meant a number of trade offs that I was more than willing to make…

Makofsky: Pocket PC Network Programming

I’ve been meaning to mention this addition to my bookshelf but I hadn’t gotten around to posting it here – been spending more time working on SharpMT than I have adding new Rants I guess… I have been reading a few different tech books lately to keep my skills up for interviews, though and this has been one of them. A one line review for Pocket PC Network Programming is simple: go buy it.

Must Have in the US!

Not often that I have appliance envy, but I do. This is something that is a year or two old in Japan already and pretty freakin’ neat. Basically it’s a washer/dryer that works like a dishwasher would: first washes and then dries that same load of laundry, all in the same compact sized bin. Meanwhile Americans finally decided to design a paint can that has a drip free spout and a twist off cap. And people wonder why we’re not always ahead of the innovation curve.

Praise to a Bronx High School (School Uniforms Edition)

Heard this on the news this morning – after first 15 minutes of post-Isabella hysteria reporting of course – and it made me want to cheer for a number of different reasons. The story was that a high school principal from the Bronx had forced two high school girls to wear skirts made out of black trash bags for a day of school. Why? What happened to the principal? That’s the good part of the story!

Maintenance!

While building and testing SharpMT, I’ve been forced to rebuilt my entire MT server. Net effect: bookmarks will have changed and trackbacks might be broken. Otherwise, business as usual. I also now have a test server set up at home, so this should be a one time debacle!

Express Pick-up? Hardly…

A couple of weeks ago, CompUSA had a killer sale on a DVD burner. Actually it’s a DVD+R/+RW/-R/-RW/-RAM burner – Sony has been making a couple of models that has burned in all of these formats for a while now, but a few other manufacturers (in this case I/O Magic) recently caught on as to why this is a good thing. The fact that the media people have screwed up the works with five formats is a whole other pooch screw of an issue, but I digress! I missed out on this past sale because my local CompUSA sold out and I was still in Washington (local stores there were also sold out) when the sale was running. Today, I noticed (as did Steve) that Circuit City had the same I/O Magic drive for $150 after multiple rebates… if this wasn’t a perfect set up for a Randy-esque afternoon I don’t know what else would be.

Pocket SharpMT – 2.0 Beta 1

New release if only to keep the Pocket version in sync with the desktop version (and to put a good few shots of coffee to good use) – Pocket #MT 2.0 Beta 1 uses the same file format that #MT 2.0 Beta 1 utilizes. In fact, I’m typing this entry on my desktop but I’ll post it to the server from my Pocket PC, as a last minute test. The older version of Pocket #MT should co-exist with this version, so feel free to give the beta a whirl. Download Pocket Sharp 2.0 Beta 1: ZIP file (from a PC) | ARM file (from a Pocket PC) | Read the FAQ

SharpMT – 2.0 Beta 1

The preview description has got the most up to date information on this new release – the FAQ has been updated as well. Also, this should not prevent SharpMT 1.x from running, provided that you install it to a separate directory (which the installer does by default) and I’m pretty confident that the ugliest of issues are gone from this beta. Please contact me with any problems that you uncover! A lot of times people download it and have a problem with it but never tell me – SharpMT can’t get better if I don’t know that it has crashed!

Lastly Pocket SharpMT 2.0 has not started development

yet, but it will begin once the desktop version is up and running.

Download SharpMT 2.0 Beta 1 and read the preview description and FAQ for more information.
