Was that a 70mph gust of wind that just made the lights flicker in my house? [Yes, we are having a wind storm at the moment and lights have been flickering all day at home and work.]

Or was that sucking sound coming from Qwest Field where the Seahawks were playing the 49’ers tonight, as the once bright hope of a return to the Super Bowl seems to dims more and more, with each passing week? [Yes, the ‘hawks lost again to the 49’ers, beyond all logic.]

Hard to tell which sound I heard, but either way: I wouldn’t be surprised to find I have no power tomorrow morning…

Wait, Really? New York City?

CNN: NYC health board bans trans fats at restaurants

I would have expected to see something like this from Seattle or LA, but New York? Especially since Seattle law seems to have no rational train of thought. A city that thinks of itself as “liberal” and there’s not only a ban preventing new strip clubs from opening [repealed] but they went so far as to try to impose a four foot border around dancers [repealed]. Or that bans outdoor grills because of a fire concern [repealed]. If it was Seattle, I would expect it to be repealed with in 12 months. Although some laws – like the smoking ban – have stuck around longer than I expected them to.

Either way, I wouldn’t have thought NYC officials had the balls to tell NYC residents what they could or could not eat.

One of the hardest things about returning to a cube farm is that of noise. Ambient noises, I mean. The benchmark I use for it is what my reaction to it is. If I notice it, it’s a distraction. If it bothers me enough to put on headphones, it’s annoying but it’s something that I can live with. If it comes through my headphones, it’s too loud and is a problem. Keyboard noise is a subjecting thing on this scale. Some people type louder than others and some people have loud keyboards – either way I tend to not notice it above my own typing, so it’s typically OK.

However, when I hear it coming from a bathroom stall it’s repulsive in more ways than one.

Rant

I’m Aghast.

I’ve had a blog for over five years now. I’ve hosted it on a few different types of server over the years. Each had their pros and cons – I originally switched to TypePad so I wouldn’t have the pain of hosting MovableType on my own… Long story short. The net effect of all of this is that I can’t leave comments on my own blog.

In the meantime, email me with anything pressing – TypePad doesn’t host that for me so they can’t turn that off without warning me.

Snowy Reflections

An open letter to all of the people in New England that are sneering, laughing and taunting the pacific northwest over the recent snowfall while frolicking in their strange warm weather: Piss off.

We got 2″ in Redmond. We also have no snow plows, no salt, no sand, and we’re not going to break 32 degrees today so everything is pretty much frozen. Caused schools to be closed in over five counties, in Western WA alone. It also caused the entire Microsoft Campus to closed. My Jeep door was frozen shut this morning and there was an inch or so of snow on my windshield – I miss my garage! – and I had to wait for it to warm up this while the snow and ice melted off my windshield. When I went looking for my trust old snow brush it occurred to me: I hadn’t used it since moving from CT. I can’t even find the thing.

Minimal snow. School closures. Work closures. An obvious lack of snow removal equipment. I haven’t had to use a snow brush since my last winter in CT. Hm.

We’ll see who laughs last this winter. *g*

Talked to Bose today about my probably issues with my speaker system… The one that is out of warranty and will have to be shipped to Framingham, MA for service. It’s big and it weighs about 35 pounds. Ugh. The UPS Store is going to hate me.

However, the good news is the level of support – no stress at all during the call… the convo went like this: I said that I might have cable troubles. They told me they’d send me out new cables, free of charge. I said that I didn’t have a box to ship the subwoofer in; they’re sending me a box with the cables. I asked how much it would be to repair something like this; they said flat fee of $75, no matter what is wrong with it. And you get a one year warranty with it. Booyah!

Props to Bose for great [and rather cheap post warranty] support!
