Mollified != Satisfied

My lost bag was just delivered to me at work. Comical because the guy that called me is like “I wanted to make sure you were home” – uwah? It’s 11:07 in the morning… no one from AA told me they found the bag. In fact, I got the claim form that they faxed over to me land in my inbox this morning.

Rather than run home, he just met me here – nice touch that – but I’m still carrying a lot of angst on my back for this one.

Impotent Rage

First, explain to me how one out of two bags can get lost on a non-stop flight.

Next, explain to me how five days can go by without the bag turning up in either airport.

Then, explain to me why the fuck I should be rational about any of this.

About having to wait up to three months before my “claim” can be resolved – especially after explaining to the CSR dude that I had a power adapter in the missing bag along with 18 pairs of [new] socks… if I re-buy them and the bag turns up, what in the hell do I do with 36 pairs of socks and an extra AC adapter for a non-mobile device? Why do I have to pony up extra cash for someone else’s incompetence? It’s no wonder that news stations can run stories each year about all of unclaimed baggage: the fuckin’ airlines do nothing to help you recover the bags that they lost on a nonstop flight..

Explain it to me… I dare you to try.

Non-Apple Mac Tablet

Axiotron: First Tablet Mac Solution to be Unveiled at Macworld by Axiotron and OWC […] The ModBook is a high-end slate-style notebook computer solution, which was designed in California by Axiotron’s team of German and American engineers and will be available in the U.S. through an exclusive joint-venture arrangement between Axiotron and Other World Computing.

Interesting product… not because it’s an OSX based tablet – I type faster than I write – but the question is what does Apple do? After all, you legally can’t run OSX on any hardware except for Apple-made hardware. Doesn’t that make this entire product “illegal”? Or does this mean that Apple is going to allow OSX to run on any hardware, announcing it at Macworld this year?

I’m betting Apple sues before the end of the month.

Poker Sometimes Sucks

I played a bit tonight. Two and a half hours, actually, in a tournament of 42 people. Top seven would be paid; I got knocked out at 20th, which has become an all too familiar story, over the last nine months… my middle game has been ass lately – I get tired and sloppy. Or worse, I get tired, sloppy and all emotional – bad combination for poker playing.

Tonight, though, I’m a wee bit frustrated and I think it might even be justified.

Transformers: The First Trailer Of The Movie

What’s that loud sucking sound you hear? Get used to it. It’ll get louder the closer we get to July 4.

I swear, that there’s only a 0.0001% chance that this movie won’t suck. How can I say that based off one Trailer? Someone spent way too much time working on the robotic characters in a vacuum. Meaning that they opted to go with their own idea of what Optimus looks like – not a semi? WTF? – rather than any of the hundreds of existing references. Consider what Peter Jackson would have gotten if he made Legolas as a jade green Lucky Charms version of an elf, rather than what the fans expect to see. In the trailer, they show some little girl carrying a My Little Pony? Negative. No cuteness should be in there. Worse, some kid – assume he’s Spike The Uber Geek – gets to hold some chick’s hand? In a Transformers movie? Do I smell a romantic subplot? Sacrilege.

Yep – you heard it here first: it’s going to suck the Big Suck.

Only The Lonely Can Play

Ever stood by a baggage carousel, waiting for your second of two bags, and noticed no one else is left at the carousel? I hadn’t before tonight.

Yes, for the first time in over a decade of travel, I was left at the baggage carousel with a bag in one hand and my dick in the other.

T9 With A Keyboard?

Do you really need T9 – or in the case of the T-Mobile Dash xT9 – when you have a phone/PDA that sports a full thumb-keyboard? I say “no”. Problem is that on my Dash, xT9 was already turned on. With a “normal” phone, you can change text input modes by pressing and/or holding the * or # key. I tried that with the Dash but to no avail: that switched between cAPS lOCK and NumLock. Would living with xT9 be so bad? Yeah, in my opinion: with it I have to watch the screen and press space or “select” to accept a word: it makes typing awkward and slow…

A quick look online reports that you can switch between xT9 and alphabet mode by tapping ALT + SPACE – whoo! Score!

I <3 Sirius

Whoa a techno-topic that’s not in the GeekStuff section? Bet your ass. It happens every now and again. Besides, this isn’t about technology – it’s about radio. In fact, it’s about one particular song and how it’s been ripped to shreds on terrestrial radio.

And why it sucks.

Red Vs Blue: PSA “Let’s All Go To The Movies”

RedVsBlue: PSA “Let’s All Go To The Movies” If you go before 4pm tickets are only $75 for seniors

I’ll be honest: it’s not their best PSA but the picked four annoying movie behaviors that I’ve Ranted about before which – along with their choice of on screen movie selection – earns them some Rants related lub.

Everything Old Is New Again

AOL TV News: Since 1966 WPIX in New York has had the TV yule log market to itself. Now they’ve got some competition. […] The INHD Yule log has been airing since 2003 and, since the number of HDTV owners has been doubling every year, is available to many more people each year. It will air for 24 hours starting 7 a.m. EST on Christmas. […] The WPIX Yule log will air on 10 other stations also owned by Tribune Broadcasting, and on the WGN superstation.

Long live the Yule Log!

Quantifying The Subjective

Creating Passionate Users: what is the meta-level for a game? Oh yes, fun. Purple Moon got the individual implementation details right, and applied all that they’d learned from the research, but forgot the forest. Fun.

Not often that I quote Kathy, but I’ve been reading the site for a long while… it’s just that this particular nugget has been rattling around in my head all morning because it’s an extremely core tenent to my job. I mean, I work in the gaming industry, right? True, I don’t work on any one one specific title. And true, I don’t work with the content of the games themselves – which is good cuz I can’t draw worth a shit! No, I work with the “non-game” aspects of the game: common technology [read: plumbing] that a typical gaming programmer won’t want to deal with and I do that across multiple titles. Even so, this notion of “the meta-level” is something that haunted my thoughts when I contemplated taking this job: Do I want to base my success at a job on something as subjective as “fun”?

Nice to know I’m not the only one that sees such a problem…
