What Would You Do?

Say you were standing behind a younger woman[1] while in a long line at a coffee shop and you noticed a nickel-sized hole in the back of her jeans, up in the corner where the back pocket is sewn. A skin colored hole – meaning that she was either wearing high rise underwear or most likely a thong – in her work clothes.

Would you say something? Should you say something? She’s was on her way to her job – does that factor in? I just ignored it…

[1] Yes, pointing out “younger woman” is key to the argument. Man, of any age? Wouldn’t care and certainly wouldn’t be embarrassed 99% of the time. Older woman? Thicker skin, IMHO. Younger woman? That spot would have turned red from the blush. Unless she knew about it already and didn’t care, in which case the whole question is moot.

Vista Tip: Elevated Command Prompt Here

One of the things that irks me is I’m trying to do stuff in a deeply buried directory in Explorer and the realize that I want to do something Command Prompt related. You get all the way down to where you want to be and say “uwaaaah!” because you realize that you now have to type that long path into a command window. Sure you could copy the path from the directory bar and paste in the command window, but, well, that’s a bunch of steps I don’t feel like dealing with.

In Vista, there’s an addition challenge because you might want a Command Prompt with Elevated permissions.

Below you’ll find a set of Registry settings that will enable a “Command Prompt here” and “Elevated Command Prompt here” menu item when you right click on a drive or directory in Explorer, including the Start Menu Vista Button.

Dating? Dating Sucks.

Personally, I think could overload this server with the pitfalls and perils of dating. A chunk of my book tells a small part of the pain that I’ve had to endure over the years… the planned second edition of it would include a hell of a lot more – like the “adult” relationships – assuming I ever got time to write it.

Let me tell you want a resent night entailed – an all too typical a night…

I Want Royalties

CartoonBank: New Yorker Cartoon (Next to Starbucks is Starbucks Kids, with kids jumping all over the place.)

I said it first: now that non-smoking sections are moot with most restaurants going entirely smoke free, there are some places that should offer child-free seating. Not places like McDonald’s or diners and the like – I’m talking higher end places.

Nothing kills a first date over dinner like a full blown tantrum with flying food at a swanky eat’m up joint.

zOMG! President WOP!

This made my entire day.

MSNBC: Giuliani: ‘A real good chance’ of 2008 bid. Former New York mayor said he is leaning toward presidential campaign

I don’t care which party he runs for – I’m all in. In fact, if he sticks to the Republican party, which he probably will, I think he’s more balanced than any other candidate in recent history. Italian, smooth and active (as in cleaning up New York City), calm under fire (as in 9/11), and divorced (religion may be important but he’s still smart in a secular way)… and the Democrats don’t seem thrilled with Hillary yet and Obama is still a wild card…

Should be an interesting year either way.

What About Vista Anyway? How About Office?

A number of people have asked me “what do I need to run Vista?” over the last few days… in some ways, it’s a trick question. After all there’s a bunch of different versions of Vista. It runs fine without Aero – the glassy styled Windows – and there’s a boatload of features between the versions… so, simply put: it depends.

And now for Part 4 of a trilogy of Vista/Office posts.

Speaking Of SKU’s

Speaking of SKU’s, these charts should prove to be invaluable:

Vista editions: Retail SKU’s include Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate

Office editions: Retail SKU’s include Home and Student, Standard, Small Business, Professional, and Ultimate

If only for my own sanity – I keep forgetting which has what… you get spoiled running the Ultimate edition of both. *g*

Memory Loss

I had a bunch of stuff to write… total memory gap. What’s more is that I was no where near a running instance of notepad or a piece of paper when I was thinking… *shrug* Lost or delayed, does it really matter?

In other news, has anyone else noticed that Vista ships tomorrow night at midnight? And I mean that in a good way – being this close to our Main Campus is like being at the epicenter: I’m wondering if there’s a similar level of excitment in other parts of the country.

Is anyone going to a Best Buy or CompUSA? I’ve seen the list of swag – I’ll probably go.

I’m also amused to see the new Office SKU’s running around store flyers. Over the holidays I heard “Get the Student/Teacher version – it’s the same [as Professional] and much cheaper!” from three stores in two states. The SKU’s change in 2007 – Office Max had a good chart of what comes in each SKU. Of interest was: Edu comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote but no Outlook – Standard comes with the same but with Outlook and no OneNote. There’s also an Ultimate SKU I had overlooked that comes with is the only other SKU to come with OneNote… shame, too because OneNote rules.

Ah well… should be an exciting week on many levels!

ZOMG! Stop Thief!

From http://psp.connect.com:

See the car? Looks familiar, some how… in fact, I remembered this: Project Gotham 3 Screen shot via http://www.bizarrecreations.com/ for the Xbox 360.

Sony… Sony… you’re t3h suck. Shame on you for passing off someone else’s game for your own, especially when you claim the PS3 is so much better than the 360…

Pwned.

Did You Just Feel That?

Hmmm. I would swear I can feel a cloud of Bad Geek Karma swirling over my head. The early warning signs? I can’t get my Sirius Widget to load and play music. And not for anything, but having to leave IE open for streaming music sucks. I’m half tempted to bring in Sirius hardware to avoid it. I also recently noticed that my home machine was built in November, 2002. That’s just ripe for disaster. On top of that, I’ve noticed a drop off in my page hits – that’s when I noticed that I’m completely gone from Google, Live, and Yahoo!’s search engines. Not the whole site – if you search for RandyRants it’s still there – but all of the things I used to get picked up for – like Against All Odds store, Yankee Stadium, Boston Sucks, and iTunes Support – are just *poof*’d. None of my links changed, so I have no idea what happened…

Very odd and very un-fixable – I never figured out how I got to be the top seed in the first place, so I don’t know how to get it back *g*

Oh, Sure, Blame The Coffee

Seattle PI: A man who tried unsuccessfully to buy an assault rifle pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that he stalked and threatened to kill a teenage barista [at a Starbucks in the Westwood Village Shopping Center in West Seattle] when she rebuffed his advances.

And no – I’ve never even been to West Seattle.

Oh My Nose!

Gizmondo: The fragrance world has evolved into unexplored areas, and now Play-Doh has gotten into the act. Celebrating its 50th birthday, Hasbro decided to release Play-Doh Cologne Spray in a limited edition for $18.99, reminding you of that time in kindergarten when you decided to see what Play-Doh tasted like. That, a side of paste and an Elmer’s Glue chaser was a respectable lunch in those days.

*snort*

Object Lesson: Innovation

Watching a recap-blurb on American Idol, on Q13Fox, they showed a Seattle hopeful in her first round audition. I had forgotten that American Idol was more like The Gong Show early on rather than Star Search… I’ve never watched it. Never seen an episode of Baywatch or The OC either, for that matter; didn’t catch up with 24 until the fifth season day.

Anyway, the clip they showed had some blonde chick singing almost like a eunuch with a supporting role in an opera. Wasn’t a manly voice but it wasn’t a female voice either. Simon asked her “what are we supposed to say to that?” She replied, “I sing in an innovative way, that no one else has ever heard before!”

Object lesson, in what I’m calling Randy’s Axiom 1: “just because something is innovative, it doesn’t make it good because it’s innovative”.
